Fighting Games Pet Peeve
There's this one thing that's been really bugging the hell out of me about fighting games. Why is it you can never hit you opponent when he's down and have to wait till he starts getting up before you can hit the fucker again? In every fighting game I've played so far, the Street Fighter & Mortal Kombat series, Virtual Fighter, and a couple others I can't remember, once you knock or throw your opponent down you can't hit him until he starts getting back up.
In a real world fight, once you get the other guy down on the ground, you keep kicking, stomping, and pounding the fuck out of him so he doesn't get a chance to get back up. Once the guy is down he gets pounded until he's unconscious, dead, or you decide he's had enough. I have yet to find a single fighting game where you can do that. This pisses me off.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

How could i forget SC... good call, Yeah you can beat down people alot in 3D fighters. 2D fighters is another storyStormbringer wrote:You beat while they're down in SoulCalibur. In fact I do that regularly.
There are plenty of fighting games where you can beat downed players. Most the fighting games I've played you can.
Re: Fighting Games Pet Peeve
Are you sure? I was playing Virtual Fighter 4 on my friend's PS/2 earlier on today and I could not hit the opponents when they were down. Sure I could corner them and pound them senseless, but once they go down I couldn't hit them till they started getting back up. Is there a secret move I'm missing or something because I couldn't hit them after I'd flattened them on the ground.thecreech wrote:What the hell are you talking about. And yes, three-d fighters tend to allow more brutal combat than 2-d ones. With 2-d ones I suppose it's a limit of the game system.

Yeah in 2D ya can't...eh.
The 2D arena never went into it because of what SF established, thus they went the combo route. In SF2 you did pretty much 2 hit to a maximum of 12 hit(and this was only done by Vega's re-dizzy).
That kept as tradition throughout the 2D reign with combos being the mainstay and thus keeping the enemy on their feet.
In 3D it's so very nasty that you can combine the two efforts and while not hurt someone who's fallen...but you can get a few licks that you never could in 2D.

Actually in all the Capcom fighting games after X-Men you can hit the suckers when they're down. That includes:
X-Men Children of the Atom
Marvel Super Heroes
X-Men vs. Street Fighter
Marvel vs. Street Fighter
Marvel vs. Capcom
In fact you have special moves like trying to cushion the fall or roll away, so you don't get hit when you're down. I'm sure there are others like Darkstalkers or Street Fighter Zero you can also do it but I don't promise anything.

Re: Fighting Games Pet Peeve
Usually pressing "jump" and an attack (punch or kick) will trigger a special attack where you jump and land on your knee or head on your opponent - your opponent can counter it by rolling. I think in some cases, getting really close and hitting "down" + punch triggers a simple punch to the fallen victim, but I'm not sure.aerius wrote:Are you sure? Looks like I have some new games to go try out. Here's a question, in these games which you speak of, can you keep pounding the guy when he's down until he's dead? Is it possible to knock the opponent down and keep hitting him in such a way that it's impossible for him to block, escape, or recover?

No...you do little damage once they are knocked down. It more of a cheery on top type of damage.aerius wrote:Looks like I have some new games to go try out. In fact no game I know except most of the UFC games or wrestling can you accomplish this.

There are ways to grapple and fight on the ground but nothing unescapable. Why would you want that? That would make a completely unplayable game?aerius wrote:Looks like I have some new games to go try out. True enough, a permanent ground & pound wouldn't be too good for game dynamics. But still, I'd be happier if I could knock say 1/3 to 1/2 off the guy's health when he's down instead of getting a token hit or 2.thecreech wrote:There are ways to grapple and fight on the ground but nothing unescapable. I was thinking about how we have realistic flight simulator games, I wonder if there's a market for realistic fighting games?

UFC is realistic in so far as most fights end with you sitting on your opponents chest pounding their face until they fall unconcious.Ghost Rider wrote:A minor one...if you consider UFC realistic.aerius wrote:I was thinking about how we have realistic flight simulator games, I wonder if there's a market for realistic fighting games?

You can, if you time your power move well enough. Mega-Optic Blast when your opponent is down and can't block = lots of extra cheap damage.aerius wrote:But still, I'd be happier if I could knock say 1/3 to 1/2 off the guy's health when he's down instead of getting a token hit or 2.
Also on one of those games you can chain all 3 of Chun-Li's super combo, like using the big ball of death, and right before it ends use the lots-o-kicks, then another ball of death. Unfortunately each does progressively less damage, since there's a maximum amount of damage a combo can make or something.

Same with Killer Instinct. I remember playing it years ago. Gah. I beat the shit out of someone, hack them up, and then stand there like an idiot while they stagger to their feet.aerius wrote:Are you sure? In Soulcalibur it's entirely possible to beat someone to death while they're down. I do it regularly.aerius wrote:Looks like I have some new games to go try out. No, you can't keep them down permanently but you can jump them while they're getting up and put them down right away.

I find interesting in that the "Bruce Lee/Jeet Kwun Do" method works even it you aren't a button master or a button master. Is it just me, or why does the "Bruce Lee" character always have the most intuitive button/movement combos to master?

The counter to this is either a rising strike or rolling away when you get up. Unless your opponent has one of the long weapons, he's not going to be able to hit you if you roll away when you get up.Stormbringer wrote:In Soulcalibur it's entirely possible to beat someone to death while they're down. Definitey in the wrestling games, sure its fake but how can you resist climbing up to the top turnbuckle and unloading the Guillotine legdrop.
Not to mention the newer games have complete character customization and move lists. I'll always remember by custom character, that and the old DX theme music.
