My monitor is too dark...

Yes, it would appear that my monitor seems to think that it's a good idea to give me brightness levels only useful to a person attempting to render a movie depicting the final showdown between Sam Fisher, Garrett, Solid Snake, and J.C. Denton on the dark side of the moon, three miles underground, in a ten foot by ten foot featureless room.
Fortunately, I can use my NVidia gamma control to up the brightness for most apps, but for watching movies (downloaded or DVD), it sucks ass. I was watching the Whole Nine Yards, and unless it was a scene in FULL DAYLIGHT, I could not make out Michael Clarke Duncan's face.
I have my latest video card and monitor drivers, so I can't figure this crap out. A friend of mine has the same monitor setup and doesn't seem to have the same problems...
Any ideas as to what the hell is going on? I've got a Viewsonic E90 with a GeForce 4 Ti 4600.

There is no dark side of the moon.

Are you suggesting that the sun somehow shines on the entire surface of the the moon at all times?

No, I am saying that the moon has no permanant "Dark Side," no more than Earth has a "Light Side."

Then presumably he meant the current Dark Side of the Moon. Or perhaps the album, though I never thought it was particularly dark.

Have you tried setting your monitor on fire?

Try inserting and removing your cabling, you might have a loose pin or something.
If that doesn't work, your CRT is dying.

Also, try shaking the monitor cable. If its bent at a sharp angle for a long period of time, it can ruin the cable.

Sounds like an almost dead CRT to me....we had some TV's go the same way recently in our B&B.

Yeah, I'll smack T for it later.

So it might seem. I'm going to run some tests later, but I was wondering if anyone has had any similar problems.
Oddly enough, this is really a problem I've been having ever since I got the monitor, so I don't know what the deal is as for the why. Most curious.

I'm not familiar with the monitor but there's a couple things you could check.
1. Check the brightness & contrast controls, obvious, but worth a look
2. Some monitors have an input level setting. It's either 0.7V or 1V IIRC, set it to 0.7V
Other than that I can't think of anything.

My monitor died recently too. The tube just slowly died. My parens ddn't beliee me and didn't buy one for two weeks. But anyway try adjsting the cable wire because at the end of my monitor I had too the wire push it in and hold for it too stay on.

Make sure your phone isn't next to it. Magnets are a bitch. Heh. Yeah yeah, common knowledge. Two things. Once I left my cell phone next to it, and when it rang it went dark. Two, at work if we let the phones get too close, obviously it darkens the screen quite a bit.

It could be that the refresh rate is off, in which case you need to toggle that a bit. But if this problem has cropped up gradually, then yes, your monitor is probably pretty much sodomized.
