Remember one day is equal to three months in game, this will be slowed for battles, and tactical surprise is impossible. With ships moving at best 13 knots you'll be spotted a couple hours before you're in gun range of even a stationary ship or city. On land armies move equally slowly. Strategic surprise is also very difficult.

This is a major change from earlier games

Warspite, the western Mediterranean

The big three-decker rose over another light swell, her sails full of wind and helm held steady. She made ten knots towards her destination. Behind the flagship sailed another seventeen ships of the line, six fifty guns and more importantly eight bombs and a half dozen transports.

"Admiral Hawke."
"Yes what is it lieutenant?" The Admiral turned around from the stern where he had been surveying his fleet.
"Sir, the navigator expects the we'll arrive during the next night if the wind remains favorable to our course."
"That is good, a dawn bombardment it will be. Any further sightings of the brig?"
"No sir, she still hasn't come back and if I may sir I don't think she will." Hawke nodded in reply, then turned back to the sea.

Castille

King Pedro Alphonso Rodriquez de la Plata sat before a map of the known world. Stylish writng marred the beautiful map as he corrected another flaw with a long white quill pen.

"You never grow bored of that do you?" Queen Sandra Elena Montanez asked softly in her husky voice as she moved behind him and glanced down at the map draped over the enormous table in the King's audience room. She frowned slightly as some of teh edges of teh map drooped over the guilded edges of the immacuilate ivory table top. It was a gift from her father to Pedro upon their nuptuals. He really should treat it with more respect.

Pedro did not seem to hear as he frowned and scribbled the correct spelling of a province to the north of the capital of Hellas.

She placed one of her soft alabaster hands on his broad shoulders. He stopped and looked up at her, smiling softly as he looked into her cool brown eyes.

"I'm sorry, my love, what did you ask me?" he asked.

She smiled.

"Pedro, do you ever get tired of writing on that map? It is older than this palace."

"It was my father's and his father's before him. They brought it into Castille and presented it to my great grand father when we took Castille from the Visigoths."

"And yet here you sit, sometimes for hours into the night, scribbling away."

"My love." He began and squeezed her hand gently. "This is the beginning of a new age. I will bring Aragon back into history. We will take a place among the great powers of the world."

"You can do that if you set your mind to it, mi amor, but this is hardly advancing that cuase."

"Tell me something, Sandra, how does one set out to rule the world when one does not know the world outside your borders. There are countries listed here that have not existed since my grandfather's time. There are nations that were born only a generation ago that are not listed here. We must know the world first before we can take our place in it."

Sandar frowned slightly.

"We have our faith in the mother Church, Pedro. That is all we need. All will be provided as it should be. This talk of knowledge smacks to me of an education that I am glad I did not partake in. My mother taught me all I needed to know about power and control."

Pedro smiled sardonically.

"You? A woman? Taught about the politics of power from another woman?" he sneered playfully.

She started to walk away and paused at the doorway as she glanced back over her shoulder.

"I won a King by my side did I not?" she asked innocently and regally strode out of the room.

Pedro laughed heartily and slammed his quill down on the tabel top. There would be time enough for this later. he thought. He glanced down at the south western portion of his kingdom, at the enclave of provionces no longer under his god given dominion.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

Eronwal, yes there was time enough for all his plans.
Wherever you go, there you are.

Prince Alexios Konstantinos, eventually to be Emperor Alexios V of the Roman Empire of Hellas, was commencing a review of a regiment of Royal guardsmen. The Varangian Guard had originally been recruited from the far north, but over the centuries this had become a matter of history and the members were little more foreign than any other formation. These were some of the toughest soldiers in the world, and disciplined. They stood perfectly straight, uniforms impeccable, weapons shiny dully. If Alexios had so desired, he could have punched one of them in the stomach with all his not inconsiderable strength without bending him more than a few degrees.

The Prince walked down the line, examining each rank in turn. Not bad, he decided. He had a soft spot for the cavalry, though he recognized the generally supremacy of the infantry in battle. Not all his regiments were this powerful, of course, though none could be described as anything less than good.

"Excellent, as always," he announced as he reached the end of the line and the regiment's commander.

"My lord."

Alexios walked away, trailed by his entourage. Now that he had completed his monthly review of the Emperor's personal regiment, he would have to go and report the findings to his father. The old man would ask inane questions, dribble from the corner of his mouth, and ask the same questions again because his memory was dead. It chafed Alexios that he had to perform the duties of the Crown Prince as well as the reponsibilities of the Emperor. Thirty years ago, when he had been a boy, his Father had been a dynamic, even ingenious Emperor. He had expanded the Imperial standing in the world, made important diplomatic contacts throughout the world, and above all expanded Imperial trade by a large margin.

Now he was fully ensconsed in second childhood, the only remaining activity that he performed with any skill was the Imperial religious duties. He would appear in his gold and purple robes, jeweled crown resting on his head, and he would make his appearance at the church and awe the people with his power. None of the nobles in attendence imagined the truth, that the majestic figure before them had just before the service forgotten that his eldest son had been dead for fifteen years and had stormed through the palace demanding to know why the boy wasn't ready for mass. Alexios was glad that his father's fevered and dying mind still had the ability to keep up appearances so effectively. Otherwise they would have been forced to pretend he was tubercular or some other excuse and he would have to shoulder that difficulty as well.

Alexios sighed. It hurt to think it, but the sooner his father died, the better it would be for him and the Empire.

An older man was sitting at a large oak chair, pointing out things on a piece of paper to the young man standing beside him, two crowns lay on the table, holding down sides of the map, gaurds covered the walls of the rather Spartan room, if not for the crowns and the gaurds a passerby would have barely been able to tell that they were in the royal palace, and not only that but also in the company of the king and the heir.

"Father, I know every last detail of both our lands and the countries of this world. I know the defensive strategies, the fortifications strengths and weaknesses. But why do we not expand? We have the armies to do so, and most of the land near us is just being for the taking. And if the rumors are true about this new king who is militarizing Aragon we will need everything we can get now."

The boy looked rather flustered, and had been arguing with his father for hours now, He was Graimin Relant, and in 6 months he would be the king of Eronwal.

The old man chuckled, his whitened hair ruffled some as he scratched his head. This was Halen Relant III, current ruler of Eronwal, a very calm and unimaginative man.

"Because my brash young son, if we attack we leave ourselves open to assault ourselves, we are powerful enough to hold off Aragon's forces should they come to try to conquer us. Just be patient, this will all make sense when you are older."

The young man threw his arms up into the air in disgust.

"You've been saying that for 10 years now father and I still don't understand why we are so afraid of invasion. Had we attacked Aragon 40 years ago we would have no more worries because they would be gone! Now we are in great danger which is growing worse everyday that we wait!"

The old man laid a pale wrinkled hand on the strong young man's shoulder.

"Trust me my son...this is the best way."

Graimin shrugged the hand off, grabbed his crown and stormed out of the room.

Halen sighed and looked down at the map of the world, which showed what was going on in the world and how powerful the nations of the world were, the map was always as recent as they possibly could get. With another sigh Halen grabbed a quill and started scribbling away at notes about troop movements and the up coming changing of the troops in Malagos.

"My poor son...so fool hardy, I have tried truely I have."

The city of Derna

The crew raced away from the big mortar as the gunner approached it. He calmly held a length of lit match with which to fire the weapon. The deck of the bomb ketch rocked in the wind but the ship was held firm by an array of anchors. He gauged the wind, felt the roll and touched the match to the primer. BOOM... another thirteen-inch mortar shell was sent hurtling up into the sky. As the smoke blew clear the gun crew scrambled back to reload, a hard process which took five minutes. Only the gunner was able to watch as the bomb hurtled down onto a coastal battery and exploded, followed by a second shell from another bomb. BOOM, the forward ten inch mortar fired as well. It shell joining the pervious five thousand bombs which had been rained onto the fortifications of the pirate port city. Little remained of them now that several two and three deckers had joined the assault, pounding the citadel castle at close range with over a hundred guns.

Hawke watched has ships pound the last remnants of the cities once great defenses. Their attempts to drive off the ships of the line with hot shot had failed. It would be long before the city and ships at anchor would be open to his bombardment. It was a pity the army had declined to supply an occupation force and the emir to sign the treaty, the city of Derna was now going to have to be wrecked by his guns and mortars

The Golden Hall of Elyna

The Leader, Mikhail was walking towars the enterance of the golden plated hall. All of the nation's greatest relics was here. This was the true holy place through Latvia-Polia.

The kingdom if you could call it a kingdom was going through a bout of darkness. This was the normal nature of the nation. It would often fall behind for a whole generation only to gain an edge of years over the most moden opponents.

"Herr Warlord, how was the service?" asked the Magician from Riga.

"Very good, Smidz, very good. Any news from the frontier?"

"No, nothing drastically important. tHe Magician from Ryzaan is expecting an visitor from the East. The Magician from Elyna has his quartley fianances report."

"Ah, thank you. Smidz, tell how goes our plan for the southern lands?" asked Mikhail passing through the slits of stained sunlght.

"The Magician from Minsk has it in all under control those meager peseants will bleed. I believe he has hired mercanries," Smidz said in his holy robes. "May the Light of Acun be with you my lord."

"And with you. I shall ride west t Danzig I leave Supreme Praetrion Commander Achiellies in charge of Smolensk." And with that the Leader robed in armour jumped onto his steed rode off with over a hundred Praetorions. It was never sure would be leader tomorrow morning but it was sure the Praetorions would support him.

Charlottenburg, Palais Schaumburg

As he turned away from the windows of his private Chamber, he turned to his Chancellor.
"Wilhelm, we have to do it. Now or never."
"But your Majesty," the stocky Chancellor objected. "I don't think-"
"Come on, Wilhelm, if we don't do it, others will do. We have to expand."
He looked towards the little man sitting in the chair besides the Chancellor.
"Your report, Admiral? Is my Navy fit for the task?"
"Yes, your Majesty," Admiral von Hannach said immediately. His deep voice was startling, considering it came out of the smallish, almost elf-like appearance. "We have put up a small naval base on one of the isles in what is called the Azores. And our initial reports have assured the Admiralty that we have found a suitable...colony." Even though he tried to control it, the Admiral couldn't quite keep out the little resentment he seemed to have about setting up "colonies". But then he was an average Imperial citizen.
"As soon as you command, the flotilla will set sails. It was christened Brasilien by the initial scout's captain."
"So be it, Admiral. Send the courier." His Imperial Highness Emperor Friedrich V. sighed. For the first time in almost have a millenium, the Roman Empire was again expanding its grasp. May Jupiter have mercy

Kaiser Schoeder sat in conference with his top military officils. They had just recieved a courier from the Holy Roman Empire. They were asking for help in a little... 'project' After long debate, the Kaiser finally set his foot down.

" we need their wood, and mineral wealth... Send word to legions I-IX and tell them to moobilize for war. We shall be joining the Holy Roman Empire...

Meanwhile along the traderoute btween the Kaiserreich and her colonial holdings in the New World...

Schiessen!!! Loud booms and smoke filled the air, as a 4th rate frigate fired a broadside upon a pirate brig.

The waves rolled the ship up, and the guns on the ships upper deck fired. 2 balls attached by chains flew through their air, cutting through men and rigging. On the down roll the guns on the lower deck fired, their cannonballs striking the hll of the brig. Smashing through the hull of the smaller ship in a shower of slinters and blood rom dying gun crews.

Pirates jumped into small boats and lept overboard as ther ship foundered. As the frigate swept by, she opened fire again, this time on the down roll with grapeshot.. decimating the already doomed pirate force. And as blue sharks and oceanic whitetips began showing ther dorsal fins... A loud cheer could be heard from the frigate

The Corridor of the Chambers, Osst

Lord Manuel de Austs angrily wiped his sweaty brow as he marched down the lavish Corridor. Behind the towering brass double-doors the princes of the Chamber were arguing ferociously. The stuffy palace was overheating him; his greying scalp itched terribly. He was, for once, glad that his executive uniform was so simple. It lacked authority, but it was not hot.

"You are, ah, completed, lord? I see clock, has been only two hours. Deciding the fate of our nation, brisk work, eh?"

Manuel had long ago despaired of drilling any respect into his chief steward. Alexander von Reichstein had adopted a name suitable to his new country- though he had found the mixmatch of Germanic and Hellenic names to be rather odd -but his foreign accent seemed unshakable. Maneul had never heard anything quite like it, and all his attempts to divulge Alexander's origins had failed.

"The Ausprinces are arguing about a tax on constructing leisure pools," replied Manuel, rejecting the coat Alexander offered him, "I thought I could excuse myself from that discussion."

"And the, ah, the bishop-"

"-the patriarch," corrected Manuel,

"Ah, yes, the patriarch, he is arguing too?"

"No," replied the chief prince, "He stormed out of the Chambers about an hour ago after I refused his demands."

"And they were...?"

"Absurd taxes on wine."

"Just wine, my lord?"

"And whores, but that doesn't matter. The minute I start taxing trade, the princes will crucify me."

"Perhaps it would be good, eh, to die in the same way as our Lord and Savior?" Alexander grinned. The pair had come to the end of the Corridor, which led out into a wide parkway in the center of the city. The area was unnaturally green, but the beautiful foliage began to wane on the edges of the Republican Plaza and soon faded into a more urban enviroment.

"Perhaps, Alexander, but not right now."

"Ah, but lord, were you taxing trades, you would be making much money, no?"

"Yes, until everyone realizes that the only things we have to trade can be gotten elsewhere, in much more convienent locations. Our taxfree enviroment is the only thing that keeps us afloat."

"I am thinking you are oversimplifying the problem for a poor foreigner, my prince."

"Yes, I am, but not for you, Alexander. Aftering listening to Prince Frederick discourse on the subject for forty-five minutes, I am in no mood to discuss it further."

A coach was waiting for the Prince, surrounded by sturdy armored guards mounted on horseback with primed pistols and sabers. A servant livred in the black and white of the Republic opened the coach's door for the Prince and his steward.

"Black and white are ugly colors," muttered Manuel, "Being able to dress my servants in green and gold again will ease the blow of not being elected again."

"Ah, but my prince, you condemn the future too soon. You have four more years, no? And if the future is bright, perhaps you will be getting elected again, no?"

"Nineteen years from now I'll be dead, Alexander."

"Ah! My prince, do not say such things. We are not wanting it to come true."

"Good to know you care, Alexander. Did you execute my orders?"

"Ah, yes, my prince, I did. Your man has gone to Smolensk, and your other man has gone to Constantin-, ah, Constantine-, no..."

"Constantinopolis."

"Ah, yes, that is the very one."

As the legions mobilized to help the Holy Roman Empire in their Imperialist endevours. The massive fleets of the Kaiserreich moved closer to the Fatherland. They docked at the ports, loading aboard supplies, lemons, fruits, dried meats, chickens, hard tack, and other commodities. They loaded aboard specially trained courier birds, and prepared to defend their coastline.

As news of the bombardment of a pirate city reached the ears of the Kaiser, he was determined to defend his coastlnes and shipping lanes from both pirates retaliatioon against civilian targets, and from possible agression by the only other major sea power..

Fleets of ships came into tighter patrols around the coastline and offshore port cities.

Militia forces mobilized to combat any landings of troops, and seaward gun batteries were manned and kept on constant watch.

The fortresses that protected ports, were manned with both regular and irregular troops.

The Kaiserreich was prepared for war.

The Golden Throne City of Smolensk

The Praetorions were standing full guard in llines of a dozen outside the palace. How magncifient thought the Magician from Ryzan. And then to think this could be his, all his.

The famed diplomat Posideon Dregden had arrived from the east. It was time too talk politics. Perhaps the Romans would get theres.

"Ah, greetings good Dregden. I assume your journey here was good?"

"Yes, yes now inside matters are important," he replied.

"Well, so very concise so inside and then we will talk."

Graimin sat in his room and smiled, 4 months left, 4 months and he would be king, 4 months and he would turn Eronwal into a natio to be truly feared. The attack on the pirates had, of course, gotten out, but the nation of Eronwal was not afraid, in fact, Graimin felt pity for anyone foolish enough to attack any of their cities. More of their ships were gone with the merchant ships now however, and he knew that security was extremely tight on the small island.

The changing of the troops had gone over well, no problems, just like usual. But the troops were getting antsy, with problems brewing they wanted to do something, not just sit in a fort and die of boredom.

"Don't worry men...all that will change soon."

From all the pandamonium, tree ships set forth from the Kaisereich's min port...

One was a small fast courier vessel.

The other two were second rate ships of the line. Der Kriegshund and der Kriegehasse.

They bore with them a messange from the Kaiserreich for The Koronan Empire. It bore the Royal flag of the Kaiserreich to avoid any unnecessary complications...

Greetings and good day to you. Please do not be alarmed by our recent defensive measures. Your aggression toward the privaters in this area is greatly appreciated, and we are simply preparing to handle any reprisals.

However, we do have one misgiving. Your actions have also raised some concern as to your intentions. And we must admit, we are worried that you will engage in war with our nation.

War is, frankly, something that we would not wish with your nation. Such a war would be needlessly bloody, and cost much in both lives and money.

If such is your intention, we will defend ourselfs.

However, rather than war, why not cooperation? Imagine fleets of ships flying both the Kaiserreich and Koronan flags... We could split the world between us and become rich beyond our wildest dreams.

WHy not combine our strength, and take the world as our oyster? The choice is your of course...

~Kaiser Wilhelm Schoeder

The guardsman at the door called out in a loud, clear voice, "Announcing the entrance of Maximillian Habichts, envoy from the Republic of Austs!"

The well-dressed man from the north entered and strode evenly to the table at which Prince Alexios was seated. Alexios rose and nodded, while the envoy bowed at the waist. Then both men were seated at opposite sides of the table.

The prince spoke first, "I apologize that the emperor could not recieve you person, but he is occupied with a sickness that has suddenly stricken my aunt. He is a very devoted brother, and he could not be pulled away. I will speak on his behalf, with all authority possessed thereof. What have you to say, Maximillian of Austs?"

The fleet of military escorts and merchant ships set sail for the new naval base of Heyerdahl Station, where two frigates were permanently stationed. Construction of a high sea fleet capable harbour was well in its final stage, and the small mass of huts and stone houses were alive with people.

The rest of the ships sailed for Neu-Potsdam, the newly found settlement in the new territories of Deutsch-Brasilien.
Paul Heimich, the appointed Governor for the new, and first, colony of the Holy Roman Empire, looked forward to this endeavour.

***

"So, in short words," Chancellor Grachtenburg simply stated, "we need to revive our diplomatic relations with our neighbours, and the sea powers."
"Well, send the ambassadors on their way. And make sure they know what I want of them." His Imperial Highness was silently thinking for some minutes before he spoke again.
"I just hope that we will all get this colonialism over peacefully. I'd hate to see this nation plunged into war. Diplomacy may be the only reasonable course of action. A pity our 'diplomatic coprs' is nothing to be proud of. Yet..."

The Royal Dockyard, Durban, west coast of Koronan

"Watch it, watch it," shouted a lieutenant. "Don't let it slip like that." The men renewed their efforts at the hoist as the boom was swung around. It was a few more minutes before the twenty-four pounder cannon was secured on its truck on the gun deck.. another group of men would secure it to the ships hull.

Capitan Franklin looked down on the sense from the coastal, a dense concentration of artillery and bastioned fortifications guarding the seaward entrance to the naval docks. he should have been down there supervising the outfitting of his vessel, the fifty gun Sceptre. But he'd come up to watch the brand new Brig Repel head out to sea. She was brand new and among the fastest. His own vessel had been laid up for two years to save money. Now she and nineteen others where taking on stores and armament at Durban and other ports. I do hope we see some action he muttered, peace was such a bore.

A quarter mile away several men with the aid of a crane placed a huge timber upon a series of rows of wooden blocks. Another piece quickly joined it. The keel of a 74 was taking shape, one of many.

Couriers flew forth from the the capital city of the Kaserreich. The Kaiser had just issued an order for 20 new ships of the line... it was a tall order, but the shipbuilders of Deutschland could fill it....

Smolensk

As Dredgen was swept inside the palace, he greeted the man who had come to recieve him.

"The Prince sent word ahead of him," said the diplomat, "You recieved it?"
The man before him nodded. "Excellant. Then yes, let us talk..."

Maximillian rose from his bow with a flourish and doffed his hat. He was dressed in a black suit, the fringes of which were outlined in white. His hair matched; his greying hair was flecked with specks of color.

He clapped twice, and an Aus servant came up through the door and presented Maximillian with a small pamphlet.

Sitting across from the Roman prince, Maximillian placed the pamphlet in front of him.

"I have come on behalf of the Republic of Austs," he said, "To negotiate a treaty of some economic importance, pending approval by the Chamber. The treaty is there in full; however, the general upshot is this: the Republic wishes a cessation of all taxes and tolls relating to the navigation of the Bosporus, including taxes and tolls relating to dock-work in that general region. There are several critical details that we shall(should you wish it, of course) discuss later, but I have outlined the general idea."

"This is no small matter. If we are to grant your republic such a concession we would require a consideration in turn," Alexios said after reading the pamphlet, "What are you prepared to offer?"

Landstraat chambers, Kingdom of Württemberg

The entire chamber was in an uproar, the dozens of noblemen and
elected representatives of the northern city states bickering amongst
themselves in the wake of the King's proclaimation that a second
ship of the line, mounting 80 guns, would be built over the next year.

"This is outrageous! We shouldn't be wasting our timber on such
frivolous floating palaces for the king!" shouted a northern nobleman
who headed the Landstraat for the city of Baden-Baden.

"We do not need such monstrosities," he continued. "Instead, we
need more squadrons of frigates to protect our valuable trading routes
from pirates and of course, from our neighbors, the Kaiserreich!"

"Hear, Hear Hear!" shouted another Noble, this one from Ulm, the
capital city of the Kingdom.

The King of Württemberg, Markus II, sighed as he watched the chamber erupt into chaos
from his special balcony seat.

Such fools...they were content to stay on the land, forgetting that land powers
eventually shrivelled and died, while sea powers slowly expanded.

Getting up from his seat, he quickly left the Landsraat building and walked
down towards the foreign ministry, flanked left and right by his guardsmen,
members of the crack 1st Regiment of Ulm, who were tasked with protecting
the King, significant government sites, and the security of visiting diplomats and
other notables.

Inside, Baron von Esebeck was waiting for him. "The envoy from the Koronan empire
is waiting for you in the Blue Room." he replied instantly as soon as he saw his King
enter the ministry.

"How long has he been waiting?" snapped Markus, sighing at the idiocy of his Foreign
Ministry. He should have been summoned as soon as the envoy had arrived.

"No longer than fifteen minutes, sire."

Meanwhile, in the capitol city of the Kaiserreich, Bismarck, a
stagecoach painted in the royal colors of Württemberg, black and
gold, with the King's ensign flapping off it, arrived after a long
overland journey through the undeveloped northern areas of
the Holy Roman Empire on it's way to Bismarck.

The stagecoach was quickly surrounded by members of the Praetorian
Guard, who handled all the security duties in Bismarck and were
uncorruptible and accountable only to the Kaiser himself.

After about twenty minutes of navigating through the city streets of Bismarck,
the stage stopped outside the gates of Schloss Draken, and the envoy was
taken inside to meet the Kaiser himself, his every move watched by the
Praetorian Guard, who were ready to slay him at any moment to preserve their
Kaiser's life.

Kaiser WIlhelm Schroeder was informed that the envoy from Württemberg had arrived as expected.

We went out in full military dress to meet the diplomat. His rapier at his side and his pistol in its holser. Wilhelm walked ou of his throne room into the main antechamber(sp) with a squad of Praetorian guard surrounding him.

The Envoy nodded and then began the speech he had rehearsed with
Markus two weeks earlier.

"My Lord, I send greetings from King Markus II in Württemburg, he
sends his regards for a long and healthy life. He advises you to pay
no attention to the nobles in the Landstraat who agitate for
a stronger navy to protect our shipping from your vessels.

The King understands that the recent incidents involving Kaiserreich
vessels firing on Württemburger vessels are most unfortunate, especially
when men are killed. Unfortunately, the Landstraat does not understand
the circumstances nor think in the long term.

Markus II proposes that we form an interstate anti piracy patrol on
North Sea, jointly administered by both of our nations to wipe
the scum of piracy from the seas, and to share the blame for those
unfortunate incidents that shall naturally occur on dark moonless
nights."

"Yes... Such incedents truly are unfortunate.

We would be most interested in participating in such a coalition, and will help with the finance, crewing, and building of any new ships that need be built."
