OK, I use Trillian as my messenger - I haven't used MSN messenger for months.

But now, every time I connect with my MSN account I thjs message:
messenger@microsoft.com wrote:.NET Messenger Service Staff: You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security update. Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete the update.
Now, I don't particularly want to stop using Trillian, but their website doesn't say anything about a security update.

Has anyone else had this problem? What do people suggest?

Microsoft is going to switch to a new version of their MSNIM protocol in October. They are sending out alerts to anyone not using that new one (e.g. users of mICQ, Trillian, GAIM, etc.) as the older protocols will be phased out - the new one is more secure.

The Trillian developers have implemented the new protocol and should release it fairly soon.

I hear that the Gaim people are working on the new protocol as well. I've been getting those messages also, and it's rather fucking annoying.

Apparently we officially have until October 15 to switch, but knowing Microsoft, they'll switch on September 15.

Is that necessarily a bad thing..?
