Piracy software irony

Post by Darth Wong »

DVDShrink is a popular piece of software designed for copying DVDs (for backup or archival purposes, of course).

When you install it, they make you agree to a software license agreement.

Does anyone else find this ironic?

Only because there IS, technically, a legit and legal use for the software, especially now that DVD-/+RW drives are coming into vogue. Whether or not the bulk of the software's customers actually use the software solely for legal purposes is another issue...

Yeah, but doesn't breaking the copy protection mean you're violating the DMCA now? Meaning you can't even copy a DVD you own legally...

Aren't you allowed to make a backup copy for your own uses to save the master?...that was always the big issue with cd's and all this cd protection...it stops you indulging a legal right

Not really Byteman, Neverlock, and Lockpick Pro all had simular end use agreements.

*RIAA how do you know of these programs*

Yeah, just about every program or game makes you agree to a software license agreement.

Just out of curiosity, am I the only one here who has never read a software license agreement in their life? *Clicks next.* :P

I didn't know that. :) I rarely use software that isn't made by a huge company like Microsoft though, but next time I use something small-time I'll be sure to check out their license agreement.:D

It depends on exactly what it is, generally its small things made by one or two programmers.....:)
