My friend has recently gone away to college. Being a Starcraft addict, like myself, the first thing he does is set up his computer and log onto battle.net. However, when we tried the do a 1v1, the connection was so laggy that he disconnected. We attempted this several more times, with the same result.
I told him to disable the Windows XP Default Firewall, and after walking him through it he discovered he was unable to (the advanced tab for his Network Connections did not show up). Upon contacting the college tech support, they told him the bad connection was most likely due to the large firewalls they empleoyed. And no, they weren't going to shut them off.
In short, my friend is completely and utterly screwed. Any help in solving this problem would be very appreciated.
Oh, and BTW...he is not allowed to use another ISP, like AOL for fear of letting in viruses. We're thinking that there might be a way around this, any success along this line of though?
Question concerning College networks.

I can't think of any legal way around this off the top of my head. Your friend may just have to LAN. Does he live in the dorms? If so, you're at the mercy of the college techs.Badme wrote:Oh, and BTW...he is not allowed to use another ISP, like AOL for fear of letting in viruses. Yeah, the rules can be quite strict. Here at St. Cloud State University, you can't set up your own Wireless Access Node, nor do anything at all that would make your computer function as some sort of a server. No going around the university's internet access either (that alone isn't a problem, the internet connection here is nice and lagless). They like to do bandwidth monitoring as well, so P2P users are a bit shy around here, especially the incoming freshmen.
It's not that bad, though. Could have been worse, I guess....

No! That's not what you're supposed to say! You're supposed to say 'Yeah, that problem seems freakin' impossible to solve until you....' or 'Yeah, I faced that I myself and all I did to fix it was....'TheFeniX wrote:I can't think of any legal way around this off the top of my head.
