Trillian vs MSN+ICQ

Post by Slartibartfast »

I've been using Trillian for over a year now, or so, and I no longer remember why I switched to it in the first place. I've only been able to come up with these reasons:

-So I don't have to load two tray icons, for ICQ & MSN.
-So I can say "FUCK YOU MICRO$OFT!!!"
-No banners. But I don't remember them being THAT annoying.

I'm pretty sure there was more to it tho. Anyone, please, help me remember!

ICQ is annoying with the way that you have to press Ctrl+Enter to send, and MSN's sounds are reeeeeeeeeally annoying.

I prefer ICQ.
And the "Ctrl-Enter" isn't that bad. Especially if you want to write multi-line messages...

Maybe it's Shift+Enter? I dunno.. but oon ICQ you can't just hit enter and have it send the message.. or I haven't found that option..

ICQ wants to be on top or whatever. Very annoying.

Maybe in the beginning, because I also used Yahoo, until I found it useless, because of the way your Yahoo mail account gets filled with spam whether you ever give it to anyone or not.

I never used AIM tho, and while I've fooled around with IRC slightly on Trillian, I prefer to use mIRC.

You can alter what the keys do in icq...it just takes alot of digging through control panels to find..very annoying..it's alot easier to change in trillian

I like Trillian, mostly for multiple account stuff.

Well, I prefer trillian because it keeps my life simple, no matter who I'm talking to I can do it all through the one program here....I've friends I only talk to on AIM, some on MSN and some on ICQ....and on occasion I have need of visiting IRC rooms for various reasons and I can do it quickly without opening anything else.

I personally use Windows Messenger 4.7, it looks decent and has all the functionality I need (namely IM and file transfer). Also, because I use the functions in Messenger Plus 2 it also has no annoying banner etc. :) All my other friends use some form of MSN Messenger anyway, so I have no need for a multi-service software such as Trillian.

Trillian, because it sure beats the piss outta five icons on the tray. Although M$N keeps spamming me to update to their MSN thingy. Idiots.

I love Miranda! It runs very smoothly on my unstable hunk of junk and it imported all my ICQ history which was one of my biggest concerns about switching IM programs.

It's thanks to Vertigo and this forum that I discovered it.

Would you prefer that they simply do the changeover on 15 October without warning?

I personally use GAIM as my multi-IM client, but the Windows version is still buggy. I wish they'd ditch GTK on the Windows port and just use MFC.

I think what he means is that getting a thing telling you that they have detected you are using an outdated version of MSN Messenger when you arent actually running MSN Messenger does speak volumes about thier competence.

It's probably just checking the protocol used. I dunno if there'd be any other reliable method to tell if the client being used is MSN Messenger or not. And letting users of other messengers know might be a good idea, especially since some may be using a messaging program that is no longer being updated, and would thus be screwed and not know why come the switchover.

In other words, I don't think there are many alternatives.

As Mad noted, they're likely checking protocol and not client. Since the older protocol is being deprecated and soon shut down, it makes some sense.

Trillian 2.0 is already in beta, and it seems they're changing the way it handles protocols: now they're gonna be plugins.

Was it because you didn't want to be 'sploited by someone taking advantage of the glaring security flaws in the most insecure "protocol" ever written?

Maybe. The problem is that W9X doesn't support Unicode or its varients. Using UTF-8 means that you'd be restricted to NT-based operating-systems and Microsoft isn't going to abandon a good chunk of possible marketshare for that.
