Getting around firewalls
My college has installed a firewall. How would my roommates and I go about getting around this in order to use our music download software?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

If they have the firewall there to stop you from using your download music software, then the answer is: You don't, or you get busted and lose your internet access.
It's best to ask your administrator rather than try to circumvent these things. I've seen people get reprimanded at work just for trying to beat the firewall for nothing more than a messanger program.

Note: I'm semi-retired from the board, so if you need something, please be patient.

By using the college network you are agreeing to the terms of service wether you realize it or not. I would not advise you to try and circumvent a firewall. It is grounds for having your priveleges revoked. When you can afford your own place and bandwidth you can do whatever you want.

Attempting to circumvent the firewall is a bad idea. Colleges block file-sharing programs for a reason: so they don't get hassled by the RIAA.

When I was at the Uni they blocked P2P programs and said their reason for doing so was to protect students against hackers. That was their ONLY admited reason for doing so. I have to wonder how they could justify punishing students who bypassed the firewalls.

Come to think of it, using your college's connection for downloading pr0n, music, whatever, is unethical. Your college pays top dollar for that fast connection, and it is there for the educational benefit of students and faculty. Think of it this way: our tax dollars are invested in campus technologies; we don't need them wasted due to some kids wanting their P2P fix.Dark Hellion wrote:My college has installed a firewall. Please, download music on your own connection and your own money.
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."
