Socket A Mobos

Post by Rye »

Ok, i've been wondering this for a while and can never seem to remember the answer when i'm told it, doubting my sanity and all.

Well, i'm saving up for a new processor and mobo, my current mobo is an abit kg7lite (i think) with an amd XP 2100.

Now do i need to get a new mobo if i spent like 90 quid getting an athalon xp 2600, and if not, could i get an athalon xp 2800 for 140 quid and it still work instead?

So essentially it boils down to: will my socket a mobo accept current socket a cpus or does it have a limit stated somewhere?

Depends on the max clock speed your mobo can handle. Check the manual.

Er can't find it, chances are it's at my friend's house, in the box, where it's sat for ages ( i forget why, but it was a good idea at the time) anyway, im having a bit of trouble with abit.com and finding my specific board, and from what i can tell, scan doesnt sell them anymore... know of any sites that keep these details?

The Abit KG7 is an AMD 760-based motherboard. Get the latest BIOS update, but IIRC the highest you can go is a PR2000+ processor.

IIRC, the KG7 also has issues with the Athlon XP series of processors, even though it officially supports it. You may want to save up to get a new nForce 2-based motherboard (Abit's NF7, for example).

I highly recommend the Leadtek K7NCR18D-PRO. Its the fastest nForce2 board I've seen so far, and at $85 USD its a great deal.
