Medieval: Total War

Post by SecondStorm »

Ive just bought this great game + its expansion Viking Invasion.
Its truly amazing. If you look closely and with a small amount of imagination you can actually SEE the smile on a knights face as he rides down some archer-scum :D.

Id like to hear some stories of conquest and glory from some other players :).

Currently Im playing the Germans. So far Ive annihilated Poland and Hungary and are planning to move onto Novgorod.

Alas I got a minor problem. For some reason I cant load a unit unto a ship :(.
If anyone have encountered the same problem and have a solution for it Id be very grateful for any help you could provide. Ive look around on the net for a solution and it appears Im not the only one with that problem. But with no result .
Its probably just some lame n00b thing that Ive overlooked...

Ships are automatic. Simply place a ship in the sea zone between the two provinces, and you will be able to move armies across small bodies of water.

Unless there is an enemy fleet in the same sea zone.

M:TW is great; when I get my new computer I'll finally be able to play at something better than the lowest graphics settings.

My favorite game was the one were I not only restored the Byzantine Empire to it's height, but also conquered virtually all of France, Germany, Italy, and had a foothold in the British Isles.

I conquered the entire map with Byzantium, and repelled the Golden Horde's priamry assault the turn they showed up(though that 4-6 hour battle was hell at times). :D

Fun game, really excited over Rome: Total War though 8)

Only gripe with MTW is the enemy reinforcements showing up all around the map, surrounding your exposed, exhausted, usually out-of-position troops. Anyone else enjoy winning at 6:1 odds? :)

I'd play it more often if there wasn't an automatic revolt of any country you destroy every 10 years or so. :X Let's not mention the Papacy. Just don't.

I've had the most fun using the .conan. cheat and playing the illustrious self-styled Platinum Horde. If you can link up El Cid and the vast resources of the steppes, you got yourself an evily powerful death machine. Beware making one country too powerful, though. I fortify my border with Poland and try to focus on the Balkans and Anatolia. The Byzantines, except for Constantinople, are easy to wipe the floor with and then the Turks and Egyptians must be disabled. I notice that the powers typically don't declare war against one another once you start to get going, poo.

I'm thinking of editing the game and trying Novgorod and to convert the steppes to Orthodoxy.

They become a playable power in the Middle Era, you know.

Fiddle with the early files and they're playable there, too. :P

God, I hate those stupid fuckers. Every fucking historical strategy game has some malaise that is inflicted, brutally, upon anyone who owns Rome. In Medieval, I usually just stick about ten thousand troops in the province and when the Pope-in-exile revolts, I go autobattle.

Why the hell do revolts happen even though loyalty is 200% and the place is garrisoned up the wazoo?

The Pope is hardcoded to revolt every so often.

It's not Rome (I've occupied all of Italy but Rome), it's my other provinces as well.

What type of revolt? Loyalist, resurgent, or bandit?

Great game, I like to go with the Spanish. If you can fend off the damn Muslims and gain a good foot hold on Africa, you're made. England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire spend most their time fighting each other so you have enough time to gather your forces and march north and south a the same time. Hahhahahahahah.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Started playing it on Saturday as the English and in my first game achieved a minor victory [rejected this, but the game now crashes every time for some unknown reason so I will have to start again].

I suck in battles though. Well, maybe not suck, but I can't seem to defeat a superior foe. Any tips?

Flank them. Also, avoid the common trap of simply building tons of one or two units. Legions of spearmen might seem nice, but they'll get pwned by archers and swordsmen.

Also, use the terrain to your advantage. Cavalry are useless in the woods, so hiding ranks of spearmen in a forest can spell utter ruin for even the most badass of cavalry. Know how to use bridges on the defense and how to avoid fighting battles where you have to attack across a bridge (or pray there are two bridges so you can launch a feint and have your primary force slip around to the other side).

Every situation varies, there are too many variables to discuss at length, so to put it simply, I generally use my Melee Mass (spearmen, men-at-arms, urban militia, etc.) and smash into the enemy's ranks (or hold if I'm defending). While the bulk of their force is engaged, 40 or 60 royal knights come sweep in from behind, own the fuck off their general and support troops, then put their front-line troops through the meat grinder. They almost always rout.
