Strange error

I routinely get this error popping up:

NT On Access Scanner Service has stopped working, blah, blah, blah, do you want to send an error report to Microsoft?

What the fuck is it? I don't recognize it from anywhere. But I can tell you what it is doing: freezing my games.

What should I do?

Saw this:

Edit the Registry

Click Start.
Click Run.
Type regedit
Click OK.
The Registry Editor appears. Click the + next to each of the following:
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
• Software
• Network Associates
• TVD
• Shared Components
Right-click the On Access Scanner folder.
Click Delete.
Click Yes to the confirmation.
Restart the computer.

Did everything all the sublinks said. The error is gone, but my performance is still unnaturally slow. Usually I could play the Nightfire demo (the most graphically demanding thing I have) at full settings except for AAing, which is at 2x (max is 8x) and it would never lag. Now it freezes.
