Ok, I'm trying to slave my old win ME running drive to my new win XP running drive. I have the old drive plugged in on the slave cable and the black red and yellow cables plugged in (in case you can't tell I'm rather computer illiterate). But now I can't access the ME drive. What do i need to do?

Moved to G&C.
Check the jumper on the back of the drive. XP should pick up the drive automatically.

Despite the different OS?

Ok, I found an issue, the main cable had fallen out, and I now can't get it to go in evenly. Once I do, what will I have to do though?

It might depend on the jumper settings. If it doesn't work as-is, you'll want to check the jumpers. If one is set to "master," (the one with XP) the other should be set to "slave" (the one with Me) The exact jumpers required differ by manufacturer, but there should be a graphic on the drive to let you know.

The IDE cable came out? Make sure all the pins are there and are straight. Once everything is plugged in (you should have both drives on the same IDE, one master and one slave) XP *should* auto-detect, despite the different OS.

Don't do it while the computer's on, man! Are you nuts? If everything goes well you should see it in My Computer.

It should just be in my computer or windows explorer, as a D drive probably.

When I plugged it in and started, it went to a blue screen that said to scan for virii and remove all new hard drives and restart.

Are you sure you plugged it in the right way? Theres a notch on the connector on the cable as well as the interface on the hard drive. If those two don't line up, the cable won't go in all the way. Also, the colored side of the cable (usually red or purple) should be on the side the power connector is on. That colored wire indicates pin 1, and must go in a specific spot or the drive won't be detected.
