Recommend good free paint program

Okay, so I don't have a good paint program (MSPaint doesn't really count), and I need a decent one. Nothing fancy, just a basic paint utility that understands most graphic file formats (such as gif, jpg etc, and specifically targa), and one that is preferably freeware.

Problem is, I have no idea where to start looking, because I know next to nothing about the various graphics programs, and I don't need very much in the way of advanced abilities. Just enough that I'll be able to edit maps for Dominions.

So could somebody who actually knows their graphics apps point me in the right direction? I'd be much obliged. :)

Gimp

Install the runtime package first! (GTK+) Then Gimp.

There is a linky in one of the stickys in A&P also ;)
