don't you need an username to finger a person in unix? Can you get thier real name from thier ISP just with an IP, or get anything useful with it? Is how we found out TJ was an imposter because the ip wasn't in the washington/Seattle area?

I found out he was an impostor merely by running a reverse trace on the IP through Arin Whois, placing it in Louisiana, and then simply matching it up with the IP address from the last fake TJ account.

What part didn't you understand, just if you can get thier real name with a /finger command once you know thier username, or if you can get thier real name JUST with an IP address. Someone once said he got my name on this other message board with just my ip just using finger, but Mike was saying you need a username, an IP address isn't enough.

I don't know much about *nix stuff, or just stuff in general, but what Mike said sounds right.

Say it with me: GOOGLE.
Christ, do your own research for once. I'm getting tired of answering your banal questions.
For fuck's sake, an IP address merely identifies the net location of the machine you're on. You generally can't trace it back to an individual.

Shrykull, Google is your bestest friend on the whole wide Internet, so use it.
Shit, I even use it for spellchecking...

If you want to finger somebody, yes, you need to know their usename. You cannot get somebody's real name from their IP address, not without some sort of court order.

Or unless said person is careless about their online identity. Some boards require a real name and post the IP address. Some folks will use their real name and not think much about it.
Phongn is right, overall it is hard to match a customer name with an IP address without some real work.
