Urgent windows ME help

My windows ME just crashed after I installed a USB 2 port. all it does is stay on the boot screen with the underscore flashing. is there anyway that I can get the data back from the hard drive

also when i did a system restore it just did nothing to fix the computer. Also i called the hotline but my warrnty expired so they want me to pay thru the nose.

is there any way to fix it and keep the data?

1. Remove the upgrade. Does this make a difference?

2. You say you've system restored? Do you mean Windows ME System Restore, or HP Pavilion recovery?

If you can get to a state where system restore is possible, then you can back up from there.

If you've run the pavilion recovery, then you can boot from other devices, and can boot from a boot floppy to back up.

1- Get something other than ME. Then you should be fine.

I took it out and did the system restore (hp) that doesn't wipe the data but sets the programs back to thier original state. also since i had been editing the registry i reset that. but it still doesn't work.

Also my friend is a faggot and wants to knw how to instal an external harddrive onto a laptop with NT. It has no add hardware button and the hard drive has the installation software on it.
