SimCity 4 Rush Hour

Post by CmdrWilkens »

I just snatched up the expansion ($19.99 with $10rebate, who am I to say no to a $10 expansion) and all I can say is...damn.

Some of the basics:
1) New Transportation Option:

a) One Way Streets: Finally! You can create a realistic downtown relpica with one way streets, they not only double the road capacity but they ease congestion at intersections.

b) Avenues: Hell yes, I've been looking for soething like this since the days in SC2 when I would just lay two streets parrallel to each other in an attempt to create something like this (all I got was a bunch of traffic lights obviously)

c) Ground Level Highways: Another oh yeah. This is a nice complement to the elevated highway in that it is immensly cheper. It also means your roads are now the overpass which makes them prohbitive in tight quarters btu excelletn for logn speration commutes. (Note they also added T and cloverleaf interscetions as an independent construction option for both highway types)

d) Linking Transportation Types: Now maybe it was me but I could never go from a highway down to a road before. Now you can (just drag some Avenue tiles up to the highway and some road tiles up to the avenue).

e) Elevated Rail: I can build an "L" :D. Anyway I like this immensly as it functions as an extension of the subway system while being much less expensive. It also is elevated so you can still pass roads underneath it. I haven't yet got a good system built (as my old cities have perfectly functional subways) but I am looking forward to it.

f) Monorail: its not just for Disneyland. Suppossedly its much faster (and more likely tobe used by Sims) than conventional rails so it is the last word in inter-city transit. I want one just for the coolness factor.

g) Parking Garage its about freakin time. For those who hated having to place subway stations (and bus stations) everywhere because Sims could only walk to them here is the solution: A Park-In-Ride for hire. Damn I've already got like 10 of these in one of my residential burbs helping to move Sms onto Mass Transit in numbers that I ahven't seen since I could lay a block by block system in SC2K.

h) Toll Booth: Great concept, earn a little cash for a road the sims are already using. I don't mind the congestion hit (and its a big one) because I've either got capacity to spare or Mass Transit to force people onto. All that and it makes a little bit of money.

i) Ferries: Another awesome idea that just makes having cities connected by water better. you still can't send a bridge over the edge of a city boundry with water there but ferries do take trips along the entire body of water. Match ferry terminals with Bus stations/Subways/"L" and a Parking Garage...instant cross water transport network. It sure as hell is something other than bridges.

j) Route Query

Quite possibly the single greatest addition to the game. Now you can actually see which Sims go to work where and which route they take to get there. If you click on a road you see all the routes going through there which tells you an awful lot about how you need to move traffic off that road if it is too congested.

2) Other Tools

a) Building Style: Neat addition to be able to cycle the building style used y developers over the years.

b) Congestion/Volume/CommuteTiem Data views: Apparently they reworked the entire way the system handles job placement and route planning thus allwoing you a picture of where the traffic is and what it is doing. The Commute Time tool is great when you've got one way streets around.

c) Bridge Control: When you do build a bridge now you can control the style and height. This ensures a visually appealing bridges and ones that allow Ferries to move underneath them.

d) Make Historic and Labels/Signs: They're back...with a vengance. Thank You Maxis.

3) U-Drive It

I have had so much fun with the missions. They contain all the humor ofthe Maxis team (especially those related to the "Evil Dr. Vu") plus they serve real purpose. in addition to letting you have fun on the street level they can also be used to temporarily boost Mayor Ratings (or grab a quick buck doing dirty work).

The biggest, and best things, about U-Drive It is that the missions, once completed, can unlock reward buildings that otherwise wouldn't become available until much later. For example by completing the School bus Mission I gained access to the Private School when my city had not even reached 7K population.

Sounds like an expansion pack I need. I just got to figure a way to budget it.

Avenues and ferries interest me a lot. The "L" is interesting too. I wonder how long till someone makes BART available.

BART is the Bay Area's equivelant of a "L".

Interesting. That might finally solve the issue in one of my small-grid towns that has far too much traffic.

Might have to snatch up SC4 now...

BTW, how would it run on a P4 1.6, 16mb vid card, 256 (soon to be 512) RAM system? (yeah, I know, I've got a year old laptop that is already obsolete...)

Slow. SC4 is a very graphics intensive game and the city engine is no slouch, either. It's quite capable of bringing my Athlon XP 1.53GHz, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 128MB R8500LE to its knees.

Wow, is there a demo out that I could use to test how bad my system will run it?

Forget that, let's get GTA3-engine action going in self-built cities.

I may have to pick up the expansion now. I thought it was just another 'Streets of SimCity' type thing, but with all of these great improvements (some I've wanted since the original!)...

AMD t-bird 1.33 Ghz
512Mb PC2100
Geforce 3

And it runs fine on the small cities, a little chunky on the medium sized ones, and like ass on my giant city.

It's only a pack with more stuff for regular SimCity 4, not some car sim using SC4 cities. But that would rock (if done properly. I heard Streets was awful)

The Maxis guys estimated that it would be years until someone could render SC4's graphics from all angles in realtime. Right now those models are optimized for viewing at only four angles.

With only minimal re-arranging, my region has gone from this:

http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~jhenes/ksc10.jpg

to this:

http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~jhenes/ksc11.jpg

In just one short expansion! :D

I have been overhauling my highways, and upgrading the mass transit system, but very little zoning has taken place. The verdict is in: this expansion is GOOD. :D

I got it last night, and I kind of like it.

I haven't gotten the hang of the U-Drive it missions yet, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

I have two big cities, one with 300,000 people and another with 800,000. Once the expansion pack was installed, residential and commercial demand were through the roof, but pollution was higher, as was commute times. Also, my cities went from several-thousand dollar monthly profits to several-thousand dollar monthly defecits from the increased cost of city ordinances. Also, building occupancies for some buildings have changed, usually higher. It's more consistent now, so you don't have a case where one building holds 3 times as many people as another, despite appearing to be the same size and wealth level.

I haven't found much use for the monorail and elevated train, as you still need a vacant tile to build the track on. I would have found them more useful if track could be built above the roads or something.

I found a neat money-making trick with the toll booths. I tried blocking off a section of the town (A few blocks) with the booths, so you have to drive through one to get in the area, and I ended up making thousands of dollars a month from it.

The marina is a good addition, but I think it should be able to be built when the city starts, regardless of the landscape (You need a certain population, and one-fifth of the city area to be water)

Overall, I think the expansion pack is great. Worth the $20.

There's suppossed to be a view you can do in the options menu which shows only your transportation network. Try taking a snapshot after you bring up that view.

And for some reason, the transportation map only works on cities you have worked with after installing the expansion pack. Otherwise, there's no change.

There's something to do with the old map not yet being reviewed by the new transporation engine. All you have to do is open the city, wait a day, then save it. Do that to all your old cities and voila.

Ohhh, I was wondering why like only six cities were showing up.

OK, I'll get back to you with that transportation grid shot later. Right now, I'm contending with a rather odd bug that freezes the day after I bulldoze something, so I'm very leery of saving my game.
