Best Browser?

Post by Nephilim_X »

What is, in your opinion, the best browser software? Why?

Currently I'm using Internet Explorer and I'm fed up with it's tendency to not save pictures correctly (for some reason it saves animated gifs and some jpgs as bmps) and some other annoying flaws in it.

So, onward with the recommendations!

Many people will recommend various versions of Mozilla to you, and for a good reason.

I've had the same problem as you've had; couldn't save in anything but a bmp.

But then I ran the system through a spyware killer and for some reason, after that, I could save in jpgs, gifs, etc.

I use Opera 7.11, and occasionally IE. Opera is sort of buggy with some websites, so I use IE occasionally to download some files.

Internet Explorer version 6.0.2800.1106 is good enough for me.

I have Mozilla installed, but it's too much like Netscape for my tastes so I don't use it.

Mozilla Firebird. Its official straight up Mozilla, except prettier and faster. If you need a mail client, snatch Thunderbird as well.

Go to www.texturizer.net/firebird, get the firebird installer and themes from the same site. I think bluemonkey looks cool.

I believe that's what I have. It's still the same fucking shit that I hate about Netscape. All Mozilla is is Netscape that isn't a piece of shit. But since I hate Netscape: period, that's not good enough for me. The only browser I've ever liked and has done what I want is IE, and always will.

Themes wouldn't solve it. All that would do is make it pretty Netscape shit. :P

Why is that?

Because it's IE.

I use Safari for Mac OS X. On Windows, though, I'd highly recommend Firebird with the tabbed browsing and ad blocking extensions.

Why is that? IE 6 is going to be around for a long, long time, getting longer and longer in the tooth, and the next version won't be available unless you upgrade to the newer version of windows. You might eventually want to broaden those horizons. Personally, popup windows bothered me enough to switch to Firebird for that one reason. Lightweight and standards compliance came with it for free.

My Pop-Up Stopper application takes care of pop-ups perfectly for me.

As for having to upgrade to the next version of Windows to get the later versions of IE: seeing as I have Windows ME (which I also don't have any problems with), I'll probably have to do that anyway in a few years.

Aside from the hatred issue, Mozilla just doesn't "feel" right to me. Nor do I like how it does certain webpages and text.

I hope you have IE tightly locked-down.

Well, if you're sticking with ME, you must enjoy and seek out pain, or be running a machine so vanilla its practically pudding. Either way, I'll quit trying to convert you to a modern next-generation browser. :-)

You mean renders them correctly? Hehe. I'm just ribbing you. I must admit, there are a (very) few sites I still have to bust IE out for, but its been weeks since i've had to. Usually because the site I'm trying to look at is busted, and IE is more "flexible" when it comes to complying to standards.

Just out of curiosity, when's the last time you tried Moz? I strongly disliked the entire Mozilla project until Firebird came along.

I despise Mozilla's Netscapy-like interface. I mean, I hate it's guts. Which is why until the interface get's a complete, massive overhaul, I ain't touchin' it.

I use IE and Opera. Both locked down quite tightly, although IE more than Opera. I guess I kind of regret switching to Opera 7.2, as it's quite buggy, but it's too late now and I'm too lazy to switch back. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to update Opera for now.

Mozilla. Hands Fucking Down.

Until IE fixes all its vulnerabilities I'm not touching it with a five hundred foot pole. Not that I'll even do that anyway. May M$IE burn in Eternal Hellfire so hot that a half-ton brick of tungsten will flash-vaporize on contact!

I don't get it. Can someone explain the difference between this:

bbs.stardestroyer.net rendered via IE

And this:

bbs.stardestroyer.net rendered via Mozilla Firebird

The only thing I can spot is that IE has far more cluncky icons on the top, which I could add most of the more useful ones to Moz if I wanted to. Oh, and Mozilla has a super handy built in google interface. But come on, how can the latter inspire so much hatred while the former gets so much love? Meh.

Mozilla also cuts off the edge on the right side.

And as I said, it just doesn't feel right to me.

The spacing between the lines of text are a bit closer together in Mozzy, causing posts to take a bit less space. And that's despite all the PM, AIM, YIM, etc buttons at the bottom of each post. I vote Mozzy.

BTW nice job getting the browsers to look so similar :)

IE displays most sites correctly but IE has alot of safety issues.
Mozilla or Opera are safer but some sites will not work.
