Though i'm reluctant to admit it, i've only just taken a look at mIRC, and I have a question to ask:

When my slot comes up in a queue, do I have to assign a download location, or can I be away from the comp?

Is it normal to have to wait 7 hours for a download to start?

That depends on your settings. Look through the options menu. There'll be something for accepting or rejecting incoming files (set this to auto-get) and a field for where you want to download your stuff. Also make sure you set the ignore filter so that what you want downloaded doesn't accidentally get blocked out.

If you do all that, your download should start automatically.

And yes, if the sends are slow and there are lots of queues, you may have to wait overnight for a download.
