Yes, i'm using WMP (Stands while crowd points and laughs), and i'm having trouble playing long .avi files. I just get an error when I try to play them. Are there any codecs I could download, or is there a better player available?

There are also plenty of better players too. Winamp 2.9 can play video.

IrFanView is also a great one to use. Or if you want to do all sorts of stuff to your avis also, you can get virtualDub.

All those that I've listed are as of now, free.

3rd Impact, ignore these heathens. WMP rules all when it's souped-up with the proper codecs. Go to http://www.kazaalite.tk and download their K-Lite Codec Pack.

You don't need to download K-Lite for this. Their pack has all the best codecs you'll ever need.

It's possible that the AVI's you're trying to play aren't really AVI's. Windows users have this annoying habit of thinking that changing a file's extension to ".avi" will magically recompress it with DivX and make it DVD-quality. You can check the headers in a hex editor of the file to see what it actually is. If you see "RIFF" somewhere in there, it's an AVI. If you see just a bunch of crap, it's probably an MPEG. If you see Microsoft's metadata plastered all over it, it's a Windows Media file.

Thanx for the K-lite info.

No problem, I am simply honored to be in service of the K-Lite Gods. :)

I personally use Zoom Player as a replacement for WMP, as the later versions of WMP seem to feel a bit bloated for my taste.

Hey, another Zoom Player user! I thought I was the only one here. In any case, I use ZP because WMP9 refuses to allow me to drag-and-drop OGMs into the player window, and tends to botch displaying subtitles (crashing as often as loading the subtitle files successfully). In any case, ZP's a lightweight, solid player that I'll second as a good choice. I'd also have recommended Sasami2k (which I used until discovering Zoom), but that project was discontinued a year ago.

Don't use codec packs, they tend to muck things up. Download GSpot and determine what codec you need, then get it.

Rather than using the DivX codec to view MPEG4-type video files, use ffdshow - it works better, handles more filetypes and has more postprocessing filters.

I like ZoomPlayer quite a bit, too, but it tends to be a bit wonky on my computer. Occasionally it'll complain that it can't do WM9 overlay and such.

I use the "old" Windows Media Player (I prefer its simplicity and interface) for everything except MP3s and WMVs, which Winamp and the modern WMP handle respectively.

I just make sure the Dvix codecs are up to date.

You say you have problems playing long AVIs....HOW long are they? There is a size limit on AVI files. Anything larger than 2GB and it frells up.

I had a similar problem. I can't remember the steps, but I had to install an older version on top of the newer version to get the sound to play.

Y'all use Zoom Player too? Hella!

I switched to ZP all because of ONE thing I hated about WMP: Play a WMx/ASF/Other-MS-Proprietary-Crap-Format and you'll quickly find out (and usually to your detriment) that MS likes to allow wankers to embed autoexecuting Javascript and ActiveHaX inside its video formats. And what kind of wankers would take "unfair" (read: Fully Intended By MS) advantage of that little security-breach^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hfeature? That's right: Spammers, Bad Porn Sites, and Malware Pushers!

I think WMP Scripting Fix can fix this rather blatant abuse of power by MS and the Malware Companies, but I have WMP sabotaged so bad and locked down so tight only a FORMAT C: /Y can restore its functionality, so I'm not in a position to test it...

There's a single option in Media Player to stop shit like scripts running.
