Whew! Finished Fallout 2 (major spoilers)

I finished Fallout 2 this evening. I had to use a "walkthrough" to get an idea of how to finish the Enclave. I ended up poisoning the President with drugs instead of combat. My character was not strong enough to run from his office to stairs. Anyway here are my thoughts on the game:

1) Overall a better game than the first Fallout. This Fallout is WAY bigger with many, more quests, eastereggs, and inside jokes.
2) Again an excellent intro to the game.
3) The ending felt better in this game, but I think part of that is due to the way I play. Both times I played Fallout 1 I learned very little about the Master before finding his base and destroying hit. This time I learned much about the Enclave before the end.
4) The NPC's still fight like morons sometimes. Running around corners and blundering into massive opposition.
5) This Fallout uses Skills much more than the first. Think Wasteland. There were so many items and tasks I missed because I simply didnt think of it.
6) This one is far harder to win as well. Again it might be my play style. I used a modified "chitsa" character. Mainly diplomatic.

Here is a list of some things that passed me by:
a)Working Nuka-Cola machines. I thought my perception would tell me if they worked or not. It never occured to me to put in a coin.
b)Salvatore Crime Family. I never ever talked to them. Yet, they ended up ruling Reno at the end.
c)I never did learn how to skin a Gecko.

Anyway, what did you like/dislike?

- You can kill the President the old fashioned way by just shooting him or meleeing him while in sneak mode.

- You learn to skin a gecko by rescuing that gecko trapper whoose in the cave with all the ooze and geckos. You can do this immediately after you leave Arroyo, it's not hard. Be sure to come back later, as you'll have the electronic lockpick required to pick the elevator door, allowing you access to an awesome arsenal of sohpisticated weaponry and armor (no Enclave Armor- but Rail Gun ammo, Vindicator miniguns and Gauss weaponry).

- How could you not talk to the Salvatores? The reason they won was because the Enclave was giving them lasers. You should've worked for them, then killed the fuckers, or, worked for the 'nice' mob (can't remember their name) and infiltrate the Sierra Army Base for them (tough- the auto gun turrets are no joke) to get them their own weaponry. I worked for every crime family but only became a Made Man for the good one.

- With a diplomatic character, it's no wonder you found it difficult :) A character with small gun skill, sneak is all that's needed IMHO

- Did you get the car?

fallout one and two are in the running for best RPG in my books. I finished one about three different ways, and only one way for two. The super power armour was my fav, but i wish there were a few more weapons and armour types in it.

What "special events" did you get?

I've had:
The Bridge of Death
THe Talking Stone Head
A crashed ship
A group of people that seem to be from some message board beating up a troll

The Knights of the Round Table (from Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail")- in Brotherhood Armor, of course- asked me if I had seen the grail, I pointed off in some random direction, then I asked them if they had seen my lost tribe and they did the exact same thing

The Maltese Falcon- where you can pickup Dogmeat, and where a lot of other Fallout characters are hanging out.

That wierd stone obelisk gateway from that ToS episode- you walk through it, and go back in time to Vault 13, before Fallout starts. You accidentally break their water chip  You can also find the Alien Gun found on the crahed UFO in Fallout here.

A crashed whale and some tulips (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

For another special encounter...you can find a crashed Shuttlecraft with tow dead red-shirts....and Hypo Sprays.

Also another way to kill the prez is possibly the funniest...Use about 30 Super Stim Pack on him(but one after the other)

Essentially since the SuperStim heals but takes away 9 HP after each heal...he'll get none of the healing until you've done another action and recieve the needed damage and without you alerting the enemy.

What a waste of superstims though. :)

Oh, and you did make sure to get his keycard off him and use it to turn the defense guns on Special Agent Horrigan, right?

True, but sadly didn't need them(I was being ultra pack rat and had around 3000 stim for me...20 for each of my extras...so I said what the hell)...but I found it to be the funniest way given I was pretty much just trying stuff out. :P
Oh, and you did make sure to get his keycard off him and use it to turn the defense guns on Special Agent Horrigan, right?
And I hope he did...makes that battle so much easier. Convincing the other dorks to help you also lessens Horrigan whomping into you.

Though so far one of the finer ways of cheating is if you have a decent Outdoorsman, the Car(for speed) and a very high steal. Go to San Fran very early on. Go into the shops because the main merchants there carry about 7000-8000 cash...and everytime you use cash they will still have it on them.
  • 1. Steal Cash
    2. Buy low end junk...but always use up nearly all the cash.
    3. Steal again
    4. Buy what you really want(ie...the Power Armor)
Also to his learning to skin Gecko's it's a side mission which you need to ask in Klamath about. I can't remember her name but she the mother of the lass who runs the shop there, she gives you a mission, which opens up an area somewhat NW of Klamath...rescue Smiley, and talk to him afterwards. He tells you how to skin regular and golden geckos(can't skin fire).

Not to mention the solar-powered phaser!

My favorite part was moving among innocent bystanders during fights. Once they'd get hit, they'd join in and spread the carnage, which was always fun.

What i found really annoying was when some random member of someone i'd pissed off would attack me, but then bring in everyone else nearby! I wiped out half of San Fran before i managed to get away!

You must've done something outrageous- was the Emperor involved at all?

I tried that and got killed everytime. I could not fight my way to the stairs.

I completely forgot to go back and visit the Toxic Caves afterward.

I did work for the Wright family and became a made man. In the beginning I could not get anyone in the families to talk to me. It was not till late in the game they did. At that point I was more interested in fueling the ship and finding the Enclave. I did get into a gun battle with the Bishops after I slept with is wife. Hmmm....women on women sex.
I also ended up killing all the guys in front of the other casino too. Heheh.
- With a diplomatic character, it's no wonder you found it difficult :) A character with small gun skill, sneak is all that's needed IMHO
Small Guns was one of my TAG skills. At the end I had Charisma 9, Intelligence 10, Small Gun Skill in the 180's.

- Did you get the car?
Yeah, I got the car a little later than I should have but that was due to the open endedness of the game and looking in different areas. The car is great, but I suffered from the dissappearing car bug more than once. I hated having to find the car someonewhere in the open desert or worse, not at all.

I did that once...turn off the big computer, ahd them all go nuts.

Nearly left San Fran a dead zone.

Though I once did a game wherein I would be considered a mass murderer...literally wiping out towns(except the people the game would crash upon)

I had:
The Bridge of Death, did you look at the robes? They were slightly armored.
The big stone head.
The Star Trek reference to stone circle. (Time Travel.)
I found an Enclave solider stuck in his armor and had to use the oil can. An obvious reference to Wizard of Oz and the tin man.
I found a dead whale. ( Hitchhikers Guide)
Exploding Cows. ( run....)
Bad Luck Dog ( I shot his ass. )

Cool...and yes the Pariah dog sucks.

I never spoke to the Emperor. In some ways that is a testimony to the open endedness of the game. I think part of my difficulty with the game is that I visited some area's prematurely.

One thing I found weird was at the end of the game my wondering encounters had fewer monsters than in the beginning. How the heck am I going to win a random encounter at Level 4 against 8 raiders from the wasteland? Towards the end of the game when I had 6 party members I was running into 3-4 guys in a random encounter.

Heh, yes he does. He also has something like 500 hit points, making it damn hard to get rid of him...

Anyone has tried beating the game Jinxed? (either natural or dog-induced) It's also quite fun, watching everyone else's guns go critical and explode or lose all their ammo and then forcing them to punch you. I wiped the raider's camp that way, I was very low level at the time, but nobody shot me (well, maybe once or twice).

Since you're outnumbered, had inferior weapons, and enemies normally don't have lots of reloads, it affected them more than me.

The random encounters become harder according to area, not date. I think the difficulty increases as you go south. And you get those nasty death-somethings near the west side, close to the mountains, I think.

That is what I would expect but at the end of the game I went back up north and met fewer guys in my encounters than in the beginning.

Of course the closer to the old Military Base the more frequent I had to fight remnent of the Masters' army. Those guys could be tough. As were the Enclave patrols. However, once you can take them you get good treasure from them.

I wanted to be good with grenades but found them to be less usefull than in Fallout 1. It was rare to find the monsters clustered in the first round of combat and after the first round they swamp you. Or Sulik my hand-to-hand guy would charge them. Hehe, he kicked but after I gave him a power sledgehammer.

Yes...very, very funny stuff induced...though I wish more people would kill themselves.

Yeah various places had various special minions...and oi the Enclave stuff could be ugly(especially if you got 20 of them instead of 3  )
What was your party of?

Here's a funny quote from another site:
My game has suddenly changed completely. While traveling along on the map, I got a special encounter. When the screen finally loaded up, I saw dead bodies everywhere. There was one surviving beast, a pariah dog. Then the thing starts following me!My luck dropped to one. I realized that the only way to survive a little longer was to put the poor dog out of its misery. I brought it to the desert outside of Vault City. I pulled out a 14mm pistol and nailed the beast in the eyes. Critical hit-77 hit points. Not terrible, I thought. But I looked at the message screen. The dog still has 700 hit points left. It also says that the dog is a walking corpse with a glass eye. I kept on shooting, but each shot only took away 3-20 hit points. Then the 14mm pistol exploded. I pulled out an assault rifle and fired a few bursts at the dog. It lost 3 points. That gun exploded too. Then I pulled out my solar scorcher. I managed to take away 300 hp from the dog before that guin violently exploded and nearly killed me. As a last resort I took out my Pancor Jackhammer and fired several bursts. I managed to kill the pariah dog. Has anybody had a similar experience?

In fact, they're as good as the regular Combat Armor (which is the best non-mechanical suit, I think) but weigh only a fraction (and you get to look like a bum). BTW the "official" way to kill him was to answer to one of his questions with another question, which he would then fail and die. Yeah, this is from Monty Python too :)

Hehe, yeah. I got him to fail and die. This game had so many easter egg encounters I was surprised. The game was chock full of pop-culture references. The Hubologists made me laugh. Did you ever talk to the presidents secretary? Hehehe....

Yep...talk to the poor brain dead Vice Prez?

Honestly is why I fear and hope for a Fallout 3.
