Every now and then when I'm out on the net my computer shuts down and restarts. It's quite annoying. I'm sure Microsoft thinks that there's some good reason for random shutdown of the computer but is it possible to turn it off somehow? I was just trying to download a 6.74 MB file and when I only had 27 minutes left to go; BAM, the screen goes black and I hear that distinctive sound of a computer restarting. And now I have to start all over again.

Might be set to reboot on critical BSOD errors.

Power supply could be bad, too.

Don't know what's wrong with your computer, but Flashget will allow you to continue the download where you left off should this happens again.

It could be a power issue but it seems strange that it only shut down when I'm on the net. And even stranger that it doesn't do it every time but just occassionaly.

Isn't that an XP only problem? I have ME. How do set it to not do that?

What's that "ad-ware" option when I try to install it? It don't like ad-ware. Ad-wares have screwed up my computer once.

You sure it isn't that exploit that you need to patch? Update your Windows.

I had that problem. My computer would do that same thing. My processor was getting too hot and i had bad memory.

I have xp and i have never had the problem since i fixed it.

Also, my graphics accelerator was ghetto. I had to mail it back 2 times because it would not work correctly after 2 months of doing nothing badly to it. It would get ridiculously hot, even though the fan worked. I was told it was some unheard of problem....

Install the shareware version, it'll try and get you to register Flashget when ever you start the program, but it'll work fine with out the registration and there won't be any ads.

XP doesn't really get BSODs.

I really hope you are joking. I just blasted through a BSOD two days ago. (Chkdsk is your friend) XP is not very stable from what I've seen of it so far (4 months experience, prior 98) (98 FUCKING OWN J00!!!)

Hey Dooey, what browser you use? Try using Mozilla instead of <BIAS>Microsuck Idiot Exploiter</BIAS>.

It also might be a RAM issue as well. Get SpybotSD and Spywareblaster anyway

The W9X kernel is an obsolete piece of crap that I gladly abandoned when NT4 came out. NT4, W2K, XP and W2K3 have been solid at home.

What caused the BSOD? It does tell you.

Ummm...I don't recall...I believe the caption was
RUN_TIME_BOOT_<Random numbers>
It *may* have been that there was a power failure earlier in the day, but the comp was totally off when it happened, hell, my power bar was even switched off. At any rat, it was an easy fix. Booted up and used DOS to run a chkdsk, found the error and fixified it right up.

Okay... Where do you check if it is set to reboot on critical BSODs?

I have ME. If you're talking about that exploit-thing I think you're talking about (the one which MSBlaster or Sobig.F or whichever of them it was, was using), ME didn't need it. It was "immune" to the virus. Besides, last time I tried to update it, the computer really died and I had to reset the system (which wasn't easy since the the damned thing wouldn't start up).

Hit your Windows key and Pause at the same time (shortcut for right-clicking on "My Computer" and selecting properties) and click the Advanced tab. Click on the button under "Startup and Recovery". Uncheck "Automatically Restart". This is under 2K and XP only. I don't know if its this way under NT4 as well since I haven't had access to it in over a year and a half now.

No wonder you're having problems. ME is so unstable, it isn't even funny. Why do you think any self-respecting techie won't even touch it? Even going back to Win98 is better than sticking with WinME. (I've never gotten a WinME install to last beyond two weeks....)

Well I've used ME for the past 2 years and only once have I had to format and reinstall ME.

NT4 has reboot-on-BSOD disabled by default.
