Big problem with trying to defrag

Ok, I keep trying to defrag my computer, and it keeps quitting (the comp) when I get to about 32% and it's compacting files, and gives me a BSOD with a Kernel error having to do with the file atapi.sys. Did a compueter search and came up with the following locations for atapi.sys:
- C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$
- C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
- C:\WINNT\system32\drivers
Help?

Did you run Chkdsk or scandisk? IIRC, ATAPI=CD ROM driver...or something to do with that....look into replacing your Cd ROM driver perhaps? or updating it. Those B my thoughts.

With an issue like that, I'd recommend a reinstall, but you don't need to do it from scratch. I assume you are running XP or 2000 (judging by the NT kernel) so try booting off the setup CD and when it recognizes the previous install, tell it you want to do a repair installation (note, this is not the same as using the repair console; that occurs much earlier in the setup). If you do the repair install, it will look like a fresh install but when it boots for the first time, all your links, programs and settings will be preserved.

It's Windoctor feature fixes problems like this automatically.

Norton uses up about 15-20% system resources on a GOOD day. Not bashing it, but you need to have the processor speed and memory handy or else you'll be hitting that pagefile like mad.

Norton's CCapp caused my system to crash like fucking mad. Norton 2000 was fine, wonderful even. 2004 sucked ass.

As far as I know, if you're running 2k that only works if you haven't applied any service packs. Otherwise it'll say it can't find your windows installation. I haven't tried it with XP, because I've never really had to.
