Goddamn, is this annoying. I have Win ME, and my IE has been popping two, sometimes three extra browsers with "I hate popups!" and "ENLARGE your Penis" ads. And it didn't begin until I installed Winamp!
I've since deleted Winamp, but the popups continue. I don't have XP to stop "Windows Messenger", though, if its in the same place. Does ME have Messenger?

Ach, lemme guess, you installed a spyware-"enhanced" version of Winamp. In that case, first get HijackThis! and then Spybot Search & Destroy. Ask Ein for more information, I'm at college all the time unfortunately.

Read this
linky
D/L and run Search&Destroy that will take care of the spyware problem.
After that D/L Spyeware blaster to stop crap from installing.
Also get all the critical fixes from windowsupdate, install some anti virus and perhaps a personal firewall.

Be careful of S&D, though. It fucked up my antivirus software and killed my Office Shortcut Bar.
If they're the same as the popups I had serious problems with (which looked more like error messages than browser popups), then I got rid of then using Norton Internet Security (turned out they were Trojan Horses)

The Google Toolbar also features popup blocking.

But he's having problems with popups coming up when he doesn't have any IE windows open. Ergo, he has some spyware installed. Neither Google Toolbar nor Norton Internet Security are going to help (and while NIS isn't bad, Kerio is better and is free).

Usually Ad-aware will also get rid of annoying spyware.

Under task manager, look for any unknown programs running such as 'Save.exe'/'SaveNow.exe'.
If it is SaveNow.exe, then go ahead and simply delete the file from your drive.

Just be careful about what you nuke with Spybot. Most of what appears is trivial stuff that you can do manually, like clearing your browser's cache, history, etc...

You came through again, Phong! I just installed the Google toolbar about 10-15 minutes ago, and its already blocked 9 popups!!
I even leave IE minimized as I check on Usenet, and its STILL working!!
Thank you all for you suggestions. I used Spybot a few times, but it still didn't work. I did a search and destroy mission on my HDD using Windows Explorer, deleted a couple of questionable things, but still no luck.
Grab this Google toolbar if you've got problems!
Thanks again, Phong!

I'd still do a scan with anti spyware program, well I would personally cause I'd want them gone instead of just suppressed
