laptop dvd drive ->desktop

my dad has an old dell external laptop dvd drive he might give me. is there any way to hook it up to my computer? it is 8x and 5v and has a serial port (one of those laptop ones. is there and sort of adaptor i culd buy.

You mean parallel port connector? Yeah, you can, you just need to get the drivers for it.

yeah but the port doesnt fit into any of my computer ports, is there a board i woul;d buy with the ports or do i need an adaptor?

What? Most computers have a standard 25-pin connector for parallel ports. Get a picture if you can, because what you think is a serial or parallel port might be something very different.

yeah i'm prob confused.
the bit that goes into the computer has 68 of those little metal thing (34 on each side) and the are fused to a plastic thing in the middle. It looks kinda like this:
O=plastic I=metal

OIOIOIO
OOOOOO
OIOIOIO

and so on and so on. so is there any way to hook it to my comp?

btw it also takes power from this cord..

It's a SCSI drive. You'll need to get a SCSI card, most likely.

Yep. 68-pin SCSI drive, though I don't know which SCSI standard it uses. There's so many of them.

Your best bet would be to get a SCSI card and the proper cable to hook it up. You may need to buy a terminator as well.
