Messenger popup spam?

Post by Dooey Jo »

Okay is this Weird Week or something? I'm not even logged in to MSN messenger but a message from it poped up saying: "Did you know that most women are unhappy with the size of their partners penis" and so on. Normal spam in other words.

Last time I had messenger installed, something like this never happened. And the scan for spyware came up negative as well.

That's not MSN messenger but an old crummy service called ms messenger.

Witch windows do you use? if it's w2k or xp just start the services manager. Start->Run->Services.msc and scroll down to the messenger service.

R-Click on it and chose stop and then change it from automatic to manual.

Done. Have to wait and see if it helps.

Odd. All my experience and from what I'vve learned from friends is that that should stop them.

Normal popups yes...but when they go through windows messenger...they effectivly have a 'back door' through the firewall...because messenger..in it's absolute annoying state will automaticly look at your firewall and insist a port be opened for it...or it just uses the one already left open

Nope, I only get messenger popups when I disable my firewall, so for me at least its blocking them. :?

I set mine to 'Disabled'. Plus I have Kerio Firewall which apparently is quite effective at blocking the shit.

Disabled is nice.

Kerio don't block it if you don't have a rule, but all tcp 135-139 deny deny is quite effective ;)
