I keep hearing rumors...

Of star craft 2, so tell me, how likely is it?

From a business point of view it's very likely. A wild guess would be that we'll hear information a few months after StarCraft: Ghost has been released.

Besides, what is their Warcraft III team going to make next?

It will happen.

But in your lifetime? Unknown.

Warcraft IV. Then V, then VI, then VII, then Warcraft vs Diablo, then Warcraft vs Diablo vs Starcraft (subtitled When Developers Get Greedy II).

Then we get Starcraft Ghost IV - Stranded in Warcraft with only Diablo for Company.

Then you get Die by the Peon - A tale of a Peon lost in a Zerg hive.

Then you'd find them releasing a MMORPG variant of SC where you have to play as an SCV paying them 1000 a day for the privilege for 10 years before you unlock the Marine class. Then if you want to be a firebat its another few years. Rumour has it though that in about a millenia someone will have unlocked the Protoss player character classes.

After that of course you'll have SC the Cartoon and WC: The Merchandising.

Then you'll have the P&P RPG of Diablo IC released.

After that you might start to see screenshots of SC II, but not before its cancelled by Sierra (who had recently bought out Blizzard) because they thought there wouldn't be a market for it.

After WoW and SC:G, but before DIII.

A sequel to a critically acclaimed game with worldwide commercial success? No, impossible.

I remember a discussion on the blizzard forums a while back, when there were a surprising number of people advocating a 2d sequel... :x . Though come to think of it, if it's a choice between that and a Warcraft 3-style game...

*shudder*

Yeah, a 2d sequal would be better, but even if they used the 3d style of W3, they definately need to kill the W3 hero system in SC2.

I'm just fine with a 2-D game. Espically if support goes up from say 200 to 25000 and we can truly see the Zerg swarm swarming.

And if you can select all of them at once... DROOL

Yeah, 2-D does have it's advantages, and come to think of it, 2-d made Cossacks what it is, so yeah, that wouldn't be bad. 2D, Massive Unit Count>3D, Tiny Unit Count

i don't entirely think its necessary for a fun strategy game to be in 3d anyways... i mean seriously, starcraft is arguably one of the best games of its genre... even now... the graphics are bad, and the resolution is aweful, but i don't care cos its hella fun.

i want to see starfcart 2 in 2006-7... or atleast, thats when i expect it...

Screw that.

*imagines 50,000 Zerglings showing a backstabbers base the meaning of the word swarm*

The Warcraft team has nothing to do with the Starcraft branch. Seriously, that's like having B&B write the script for Episode III.

Bah, you don't need 2-D to get mass numbers.

The reason why they have a 200 supply cap per player in games is because anymore would slow the game, especially in MP games.

This is pure wishful thinking but:

what about a massively-multiplayer multiple-tiered Starcraft game, in which huge teams engage in an all-out interstellar war?

The levels would be:

S1) Campaign strategic - strategic fleet command, diplomacy and resource management
S2) Space Tactical - individual fleet battles
S3) Space Dogfighting - Lucasarts X-wing/TIe series style spacesim, perhaps with FPS boarding actions

P1) Planetside Strategic/Tactical - planetwide resource management and strategic force deployment
P2) Planetside Tactical - standard Starcraft I stuff.
P3) Planetside FPS - squad FPS/vehicular-sim combat

The game would start with "gamemasters" in charge of the upper levels (i.e. all new players would enter at the unit engagement levels (S3, P3) with the possibility of promotion to higher levels based on some sort of XP system. The decisions made at the higher levels would filter down as mission goals for the level directly below. The outcome of each battle would therefore be a function of the resources allocated to a battle (decided at the strategic level), the orders issued to individual units (the tactical level) and the performance of the FPS players.

This would require development and integration of no less than six different game systems, and so it will never happen , but it would rock my socks.

There's a reason I despise massively multiplayer anything.

Those that exist are generally rather poor, while those that would be cool are unworkable.

You weren't seriously advocating it, but still ;)

BTW...yeah, I'm sure there will be an SC2. Will it be any good? No clue: There's been a huge regression in the War3 community back to SC.

The big question, obviously, is whether Blizzard recognizes the mistakes it made with War3's design and fixes them for SC2.

EDIT: Silly Quote tags.

bah, it's been vapourware for years, and Blizzard constantly deny its existance.

Wow, that would suck beyond all belief. Starcraft is space war made simple(not saying there's no strategy beyond fighting). Mixing in all that crap would take that simplicity away from it.

I hope it's 2-D as well... maps are just easier to make that way. :P

Forgive my intrusion, but why exactly does everyone here hate warcraft3?
I have it and don't find it to be all that bad.

I have the WC1 demo, and the control interface and AI were such a dissapointment compared to AoE. I got my ass thashed, and am currently looking for 2. If 3 has the same control system as 1, no wonder a lot of people hate it

:D

Tycho, there are a few reasons it seems that many people prefer BW over War3. Upkeep, Small army size, and the Hero system seem to be the main gripes.
