Joysticks vs Keyboards

I prefer keyboards to joysticks. In games like Mechwarrior and Quake 3 keyboards have a definate edge over joysticks. I usualy bind the move commands to the keyboards and aiming and gunnery commands to the mouse. That allows fast and accurate firing on the move.

Depends on the genre.

I'd laugh at anyone trying to play a flying sim without a joystick.

Agreed. It is very clumsy to fly an airplane in a computer game without a joystick.

Joystick is the only way to go for the MechWarrior series.

As a veteran Mechwarrior I say use the keyboard and mouse combination.

As for torso auto return it does exist in Mechwarrior4. You have to enable it.

depends on the game...

If you're driving, flying, or otherwise piloting something then it's got to be a joystick really, but mouse+keyboard is good for other stuff than that.

Although..... I did at one time play Jedi Knight (the original one) with a joystick. (and actualy wasn't too bad at all at it.) but I've long since dropped that for keyboard/mouse.

For those interested..... It was the Sidewinder Precision Pro that I used.. anyway, the assignments (as best as I can remember them) were as folows.

X/Y axis - look
Z axis - Unassigned
R axis - Strafe
Button 1 - Fire
Button 2 - Secondary fire
Button 3 - Jump
Button 4 - Crouch
Button 5 - Use force power
Button 6 - Next inventory item
Button 7 - next weapon
Button 8 - previous weapon
Button 9(shift button) - Use inventory item
Hat up - Walk forwards
Hat down - walk backwards
Hat left - previous force power
Hat right - next force power

No, there is so classic auto-return in MechWarrior 4. You can bind a key to hold down to move turret to body, but its pretty pathetic. I'm talking about the same kind of auto-return as in MechWarrior 2 and 3 - you let go the rudder/turn key and the turret snaps back to the body.

Bah, in Mechwarrior 4 i use the mouse to turn the turret and aim up and down, and the wasd to move the legs around, none of this auto return nonsense, i just slide the mouse to where i want to aim, works better than any joystick for me.

My config :

Up Arrow - Accelerate.

Down Arrow - Deccelarate.

Right Arror / Left Arrow - Turn

Numpad 0 - Zoom.

Numpad 1 - Fire jump jets.

Mouse Left button - Fire weapon group.

Mouse Right button - Next weapon group.

Mouse third button - Advance to next weapon (used in chain fire mode).

Now this configs simply kicks ass. This config is intended to maximize agility and allow accurate gunnery while moving at high speed.

Meh. About all I play are RTS and flight sims anyway. So, can't use a joystick for an RTS game, and there's no other way for a flight sim. So what does that make me?

Yeah, that's pretty much what i do, just wasd instead of the arrows and shift to zoom, space to jump.
