What about Star Wars Galaxies?

The current KOTOR thread got me thinking about SW RPGs and how much I want to play in one. The controversy in KOTOR is that you can't play as a non-jedi, yet in Galaxies apparently Jedi aren't a playable class either.

In any case, I was wondering if anyone has actually played Galaxies and can shed some light on it? As an RPG is it any good? I heard its a MMORPG - did I get the acronym right? - which means, I guess, it's no single player game.

Is Galaxies any good?

Jedi are now a playable class- the first player characters unlocked their 'force sensitive' slot quite recently (it was somewhat big news in the gaming world). However, what it takes to become a Jedi is secret, and the ratio of Jedi to the masses of others will always be very small.

Ask others if its any good, I'm not into MMORPGs at all.

Massively Multiplayer Online RPG. I like it but that's largely because I like making money. Right now I haven't bothered to advance my character in clsoe to three weeks because I've been having so much fun becoming the mining king of Corellia on my surver. I'm making close to 15-20k per day just selling off my mineral finds.

That said there is a LOT to do in SWG and they are adding more by the day. Mounts and PLayer Cities just went active and landspeeders are coming up in the near future so travel times are seeing a big decrease. Add that to a lot of static and dynamic encounters (though not as many as they need for the size of the worlds) and yuo can have a lot of fun whether you chose to be a money grubbing Artisan (liek me) or an adventurous soldier (like many others). Politician, Jedi, and Urban Planner (if they kept it) all opened up recently so the career options are wide open.

Okay, I've decided that sometime in the next week or two I'm going to purchase Star Wars: Galaxies. From what I've heard, it should run okay on my machine, and I have a broadband connection even though I hear it runs okay on dial-up.

The only question I have is about the subscription cost. According to the official site, the pricing scheme is as follows (with my conversions to British pounds.)
  • 1 Month - $14.99 / £8.70
    3 Months - $41.99 / £24.39
    6 Months - $77.99 / £45.30
    12 Months - $143.99 / £83.64
My question is; If I choose to pay by the 12 Months scheme, will it instantly take £83.64 out of my account, or will it take out £6.97 monthly? Because if it takes out the entire £83.64 in one go, I'd rather pay the £8.70 fee every month, like a "top-up".

A friend of mine recently left Ultima Online to move to Galaxies. This was cool because he gave me his house and contents along with 13 million in gold pieces. But he was showing me his weapon smith character in SW:G and the whole game seemed to be lagging severely. Also it took him ages to get anywhere because the game is too large IMHO. I probably will switch to Galaxies eventually, becuase i'm a Star Wars whore after all, but not untill they sort out a lot of whats wrong with the game.

the lag was probably caused by insufficient ram, and from being in the city.

Beleive me when i say the game runs of 56k...

you just die in the cities if your ram is slow or lacking.

and also, travel time is fixed, mounts are out and vehicles are in the test center ready to come out in a couple of weeks.

I quit SWG cause it sucked so badly in the beginning. But now that they have mounts and my main is a firly good trainer (I got a giant peko peko named petrie who has been my faithful companion through many, many, many scraps) I may just get back into the swing of things. Thanks for posting this thread, as I probably would have kept my subscription up and not played until the space expansion came out.

There's still alot of broken game mechanics to warrant playing this game full time again. I'd wait a few months till they polish it up abit.

I played Star Trek: Armada before the patch. I can cope with bugs and holes. ;)

Form my experience the low- to mid-game has been well fixed though, apaprenntly, a lot of the high end crafting schematics are apparently still flawed. However for the first month or two he shouldn't run into any real problem (outside of minerals reporting huge concentrations but not being able to sample them)

I got out of the whole crafting business, sadly, Stormtrooper officers can't afford to be lax in their combat skills. I'm dropping Novice Weaponsmith soon, but I'll keep Engineering IV so I can pump out speeder bikes for my PA.

Thing is though after you max out your character in a month or 2 even for casual gamers its pretty easy, there's not much to do in terms of content and Player vs Player incentives, that was my beef with the game, no end game.

Perfectly, by all accounts. Obviously patching takes significantly longer, but other than that I hear it runs great.

I have heard it still sucks majorly and simply is not worth the cash.
