Who plays on a Neverwinter Nights persistent server?

Post by Arthur_Tuxedo »

Just curious. I really like NWN and PWs and with my impending return to the U.S. and my gaming machine, and with Hordes of the Underdark coming out soon, I'm looking forward to getting on a persistent server (I like those too), and would like to choose one that other SD.netters are on. So cuentame! :P

I tried two or three, but found that they usually have totally draconian rules - like massive XP loss on death (coupled with automatically generated enemies who are always higher level than you) and so on, and it wasn't fun, unless you left aside all the D&D part (fighting and gaining XP and treasure) and concentrated exclusively on roleplaying, but it ended up like a bad ren-faire.

Somebody should find a good balance between the roll-playing and the role-playing.

Well said, I've never had any luck with the "persistant worlds" and have never been able to get back into NWN because of it.

I don't get to play on it as much as I like due to time constraints with my grad studies, but NWNUO is a pretty decent persistent world. You do lose 50 XP per level on death, but that's only if nobody is around to resurrect you.

Well, that's the standard respawn penalty and I think you never lose a level because of it, but the "best" servers usually just strip you of one whole level  (like city of arabel, I think)

Wonder why 99% of the players are level 3 or lower.

Then there are servers with "permadeath".

Only way I can explain it is that they like to make you think that you're literally wasting your time playing them.

Is this the place? I just did a google search on "NWNUO" and that's what popped up.

I used to be a part of the A Land Far Away (ALFA) beta testing, using my Gnomish Paladin character, but I got out of touch with it back in April due to school-related reasons, and since I didn't own Shadows of Unrentide (still don't) and couldn't get my password to work when logging into their private accounts, I never got back into it, and i'm sure they've deleted my accounts.

It was really interesting though, really expansive and fairly balanced. You need to sign up and get accepted though, download a ~700mb hakpak, and also read their large rule book, so it's not like you can just waltz in and get an udea of things.

I could have sworn a couple of SD.netizens were talking about playing on Krynnhaven a while back. Avlis and the new CoPaP thing they have going looks pretty rad, too. I'll check out NWNUO and maybe start playing on that when I get back if it looks cool. What's your handle on there, Graeme?

Do you play on it? I'm looking to play with fellow SD.netizens. After all, it's the people that make or break a PW gaming experience.

EDIT: Btw, Krynnhaven does look like an awfully cool server. I liked Avlis a lot but was annoyed by the people's tendency to be roleplay nazi's. I like my roleplay in NWN the same way I like everything else. In moderation :)

I haven't been that active lately but will probably get back into it after they've updated to HoU.

As for roleplay, it depends how involved you want to get. There are quite a few that are pretty lax with it but if you want to take part in the main story, join a guild, get entrance to the Conclave ect then they'll want some heavy roleplay.

Arthur, give me a heads-up when you find a nice server; I' got Balder's Gate 1 recently and got back into IWD2, and come to think of it, I wouldn't mind playing on a NWN PW again. My Paladin needs some exercize, methinks (damn, he was a fun character to roleplay. Just talk anyone's head off or sicken even the most aloof/optimistic of righteous adventurers).

I can't wait to get that HotU shit going. The concept I really want to try out is a fighter/red dragon disciple. That would seriously rock

*Realizes he still hasn't got Shadows of Undrentide*

*Smack* Well, there's something I can add to pad out my Chrismas list.

Yeah, I've got HotU and SoU on my list. I'm just happy my mother still wants to get me presents at my age :D

Well, after looking around to see what's changed since I stopped following NWN PWs, I realized that really nothing much has changed at all, except that Avlis rocks even more now than they did before.

Custom races (Krynnhaven has them too but their requirement that you jump through hoops to play them and then there's no stat adjustment just rubs me the wrong way)
Custom Prestige classes
Lots and lots of areas
Connected seemlessly to other PWs through CoPaP (Confederation of Planes and Planets)
War system against other players
Awesome crafting system

That sales pitch had a purpose, by the way. I intend to start playing on it when I have SoU, and hope that other SD.netizens will join me. It'll be fun as hell!
