NVIDIA can fuck themselves sideways with a chainsaw....

I just discovered why my card keeps overheating with the
new Detonator drivers:
http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/for ... page16.asp

"However, NVIDIA's filtering in D3D applications and the cooling issue
we encountered with GeForce FX 5200 Ultra does leave us very
concerned. If you don't find yourself playing Halo or Tomb Raider
everyday, you may want to wait this driver release out until it's been
battle-tested a little bit longer. Detonator 44.03 certainly didn't
last long. Also, we highly recommend GeForce FX 5200 Ultra owners keep
a very close eye on their card's fan if they plan to upgrade to 52.16.
If you find that your fan does not operate after upgrading to 52.16,
revert back to 45.23 immediately. The new features and performance
gains seen here just aren't worth the risk of potentially damaging
your hardware.
I checked this by pulling my case off and checking the fan on my GeForce
FX 5200 Ultra and yep, it wasn't spinning. I then removed the latest
detonators and booted into Windows with just the bog standard 256 color
VGA driver and yep, the fan is spinning now....

What sort of fucking idiot makes the god damn SOFTWARE control the damn fan, and this is the fucking ULTRA line...

This problem has existed for several detonator revisions, and it's not
just ME who's having problems...what the fuck is NVIDIA doing?

I need to write a scathing letter...perhaps get the FTC in on it,
for false claims, since NVIDIA claims these new detonators increase
your performance, yet burn up your card by turning off the fan with
the 5200 Ultras

And the minisucle power savings caused by turning
off the fan is more than offset by the god damn power plug that
you have to plug the 5200 Ultra into...

It certainly isn't starved for energy to run...

this could explain why my card keeps switching itself the fuck off when im playing games!!!

Zac, what kind of card do you have? A GeForce FX 5200 Ultra?

To downgrade it, go to add/remove programs and uninstall
the NVIDIA drivers.

Reboot.

Install the 44.03 drivers (which was the last set to work for me)

Call me a cynical SOB, but are you also thinking nVidia's thinking "Not a bug, it's a FEATURE!!!!!!111"

$20 says that's exactly it...

And really, whose bonehead idea was it to control the COOLING system in software, and what the fuck is the burning (pun intended) need for it to TURN OFF at all in the first place!?!!?

EDIT: and if anyone screams "It's too noisy!" then you're a spoiled hypersensitive brat who *needs* to have your computer go up in smoke. It's it's a tiny cooling fan, not a huge noisy box fan! :finger: Get headphones, you phonophobic SOB..

Shep, might I suggest you write you concerns to these guys?

watchdog@maximumpc.com

This is a Watchdog for a magazine I used to work for. They take stuff like your story and bring it to the manufacturers demanding a solution or they go to print with it. If they still don't get the message, they have hooked up several readers with lawyers (remember the whole IBM 75GXP lawsuit? Yeah, we started that).

And that tiny graphics card fan is still the loudest thing in my PC! While the big fans usually can shovel the necessary amount of cooling air around at pretty low speed (and thus low noise) these tiny things have to work hard and speed up ... and thus are a lot louder at higher and more annoying frequency even.

How big is that fan?

Mines is a Ti4800 SE and its somewhere between 2 and 2.5 inches across, diameter.

Standard 60mm thing.

It's a tiny fan, but it has to run at high RPMs to get good airflow, hence why it's loud. If you somehow bolted an 80mm fan on it'd be a lot quieter.

Damn, I wish I had known that. I've got one. :P (What's funny is, a LLF fixed the clicking issue on the refirbed drive that I got back a year ago!)

Well, I tried installing the detonator 5x on my geforce2 and it crashed every time on boot. I had to do a restore and install 44.something.

Nvidia's headquarters are 3-4 miles down the road. Anyone want me to go down there and yell at them?

Seriously though, Id bet they are way understaffed and somethings are just not getting fixed. If you drive by on a fricking Saturday night there are people in the parking lot and the lights are on. While this was not uncommon in the dot com days, it is a complete shock today.

Pull the plug on the fan and hook it up to a power source other than the video card. This way the fan's always on and nothing the video card can do will shut it off. I did this to my CPU fan which is a variable speed one that ramps up & down with temperature. It never ramped up enough so I ended up snipping the sensor wire and hooking it directly to the power supply on the computer case. Now it runs on high all the time and my computer doesn't overheat and crash anymore.

Well, this is why I don't use NVIDIA cards. *Goes off to happily play Warcraft 3 using a functioning video card.* :P

Maybe you could yell at them for me over that Macrovision debacle. ;)

Not to drag this off topic, but why the fuck did you get an FX5200 line card? I'd bet my GeForce 3 is faster. You should have asked for advice here before making a decision like that so everyone could have told you not to.

Because the fucking GeForce 4 Ti we had burned up for some
strange reason, and because it was the only fucking
GeForce card within our price range of not being ridiculously expensive...

I see. Well my condolences then. *Orders 21 gun salute for the dear departed GF4*

Yeah the GeForce MX was truly a piece of shit.

I just bought myself a 5900 non-ultra off Pricewatch for $195. Same chip and 256-bit memory bus as the 5900-ultra. With a little luck, I should be able to overclock it to 5900/5950 levels. Hot damn!
