I fucking hate Target and Sone Online Entertainment

I just bought Star Wars Galaxies and I've now found that I've bought a $50 paper weight because I can't play the game without a credit card. Its my fault because I didn't read the box, right? Wrong. Fucking Target put their price sticker over the fine print on the box stating that I must pay for a subscription. I can't even get the fucking free month without a credit card. To make maters worse, Target refuses to give a refund on software that has been opened.

Because of various state laws, most large retail outlets (such as Target, K-Mart, Best Buy, Software Etc. and others) will not take returns anywhere in the United States of software that has been opened. It sucks, but that's life. What the hell were you doing buying an MMORPG without a credit card anyway? Most if not all retail MMORPGs require you to have a credit card in order to play.

How the fuck was I supposed to know when Target put the god damned price tag over that part of the box?

Haven't you played EverQuest or Ultima Online before?

Ever heard of a Gamecard?

Basicly three months of Paided Playing in one little card, you buy it put it in where it asks for Credit card and you can play all you want(Or as long as it lasts)

EB usualy carries tons of them, though I don't know if SWG has cards yet though just about every other MMORPG has them even FFXI

Well, sorry you lost money on it, but the law in many states (including Minnesota, where Target is based) says that stores can't accept returns on opened software. If you feel like you have to blame somebody, blame the stock boy who put the price tag over the necessary information.

Alyeska, did you know that you get a month free?

Did you also not try checking the Star Wars Galaxies website before buying? :?

Hah the month free on SWG is a fucking joke. You have to sign up with your credit card to get the free month, so if you aren't careful you will be charged for another month because you are on a subscription (that is if you want to quit).

As has been said, you can buy game cards. There are out for SWG, I've seen them at MediaPlay and are probably at most other places as well. Game cards take the place of credit card subscriptions - you just buy a game card of whatever length of time, which costs the same as x months with a subscription.

EDIT: And yes, SOE sucks fucking ass. I'll never forget what they did to my precious Infantry Online... grrr...

But wouldn't that be entirely your fault? :? How can anyone blame the game or the company for something which relies entirely on your own personal responsibility, in this case cancelling your subscription?

Well it hasn't happened to me but just knowing how it works shows they are attempting to squeeze more out, it is just pathetic. A lot of other MMORPGs don't require you to buy a second month just to get your first free month.

I still think that it's a person's own fault if they don't cancel the subscription after the first month, but I do agree with you about the "pay for one month to get a second month free" thing being nothing more than wallet squeezing.

:? What the hell kind of a law is that? Never heard of laws designed to prevent stores from providing good service to their customers before.

Alyeska: Well, you could always try selling it on E-bay. :)

They don't accept/you don't have a debit card? :?

Actualy the law states that stores can refuse to accept returns if thats their policy. If store policy allows for such returns, then they can continue to do so. Coscto has company policy of accepting software returns regardless of their being open.

The UK takes software back pretty much anywhere which is nice. I tend to buy a game, complete it then trade it back in for a different one

 I've got a friend who does that with XBox games because he's a pure power-gamer and can finish pretty much any game in a day and a half. Long live the UK and our stupid consumer laws. :)

They can't offer refunds on opened software because of how easy it is to reproduce computer software. Unlike virtually every other product, it is trivially easy to produce a perfect copy of optical media (indeed, that was the point of developing optical media in the first place). Yes, occasionally it might mean you get stuck with a crap game, but that's why you have the internet - to do some research before you buy a clunker.

Why not just arrange for someone you know to pay with their credit card, and pay them in cash?

The case can be made that it was false advertising, since the company hid information from the consumer leading to a purchase on faulty information.

As such it is defective, and should be exchanged for a working copy. Which upon subsequent examination lists the requirements that you don't meet, and since it is sealed, can be returned.

Still, SWG is pure fucking garbage. even with mounts (I checked it out) It's a buggy piece of shit with subpar graphics, depthless gampeplay, and ubergankers galore. I have SWG, the "Special edition" I use it for a paperweight and a testament to my stupidity and impulsiveness. I also have the following Games to confirm my stupidity as well:

Ghost Master
Horizons
Azurik: Rise of Perathia
Jet Set Radio Future
Everquest (It used to be good, now...Eh.)
Earth and Beyond
EVE Online

Hey now, it has good graphics on full. Other than that I totally agree.
