Bridge Commander questions

Is there still a multiplayer community in existance that does NOT use the "1.2 patch" some people made? I saw it on sale for a miniscule $10 USD and I want to know if it's even worth that.

The single-player campaign was okay (and that's good for at least a few hours, I think) and skirmishing with various combinations of ships is also fun. It's much, much better if you download user-made ship models and hardpoint files, since Totally Games did what nearly every fucking game developer does and castrated the abilities of the ships; for example, as it is out of the box, the Galaxy class has only the phaser strips on the saucer, and a full salvo of torpedoes is four forward, two aft.

I can't really comment on multiplayer, as I never really got into it. Although it should be noted that multiplayer functionality was a last-minute decision (which extended the release date some six months IIRC).

Totally Games is particularly guilty of that. Remember X-Wing Alliance? The capships were a joke.

I never played through enough of Alliance to really encounter any capships, although I remember how easy it was to waste ISDs in X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter and X-Wing CD.

What really irked me about TG doing that to BC, though, was that they said in an interview "We will not balance the ships. Star Trek ships are inherently unbalanced." and saying how they wanted to preserve the feel of the show... then turned around and fucking gave us castrated ships.

Of course, in retrospect, I bet that the change of plans was brought about by that fucking multiplayer component... that interview might have been done when they were still planning it as singleplayer only.

XWA didn't castrate the SW ships. It fixed them to a degree over earlier X-Wing and Tie-Fighter era ships. Infact capitalship combat was getting better. They could engage at longer ranges and shoot down incoming torpedoes.

What people don't like is how easy the ships are to destroy. As an example I just recently took down an ISD MKII with a Y-Wing that didn't have any torpedoes. Sure there weren't any fighters about so I was able to link my guns and take down the shield domes.

Now what you must remember is the game is striving for a degree of ballance. They nerfed the capships so that fighters can kill them. Do we like that? Well yes and no. Its fun killing them, but in one sense your wondering why they are so weak.

However, this isn't the same issue with Bridge Commander. They outright changed the capabilities of ships. This would be like giving an X-Wing only two lasers instead of four. Yes they screwed up the Tie-Interceptor, but that was a real accident, not game ballance.

You can blame Totaly Games for not fixing certain mistakes and making capships to easy to fight in XWA and you can blame them for sheer idiocy for not getting the weapons in BC right.
