There is something seriously fucked up in my monitor
For some reason I don't know why the screen randomly goes yellowy every thing get a real bad yellow tint to it it doesn't last very long but it keeps hapening and I want to know why. It is about a year old and I just cleaned all the dust off of it, does anyone thing some compressed air to the insides might be a good idea or no??
I've gone to find myself. If I get back before I return, please keep me here

It usually happens to much older monitors- eventually, it'll become permanently yellow. I don't remember exactly what causes it, something to do with the color combinations or some such and one of them failing. I suggest you take it for maintenance.

It is a cable problem. It will probably get progressively worse. For now, you can work around it by jiggling the cable when the screen goes yellow. However, there is a new monitor in your not-too-distant future.

It's actually *not* a cable problem.
My dad, being a broadcast engineer, has tons of books lying around. And being a bookworm, I've read most of them.
The problem is likely a short leading to the "blue" electron gun (the one that excites the blue phosphors). When you jiggle the monitor cable, you're working the short (probably in the data going to that gun, if it was the power... you'd know it.) Eventually the short will be so far apart that it won't short anymore.
The only way to fix it is to pull the monitor apart and find the short.

I have seen this happen to an old Gateway EV500 monitor in my home. The solution is to shake the monitor around untill it is restored.russellb6666 wrote:For some reason I don't know why the screen randomly goes yellowy every thing get a real bad yellow tint to it it doesn't last very long but it keeps hapening and I want to know why. I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

That sounds like a good idea besides the fact that from everything i've read about computers taking a monitor apart and fiddling with it could most likely mean DEATH so yeah.........I wonder how much a good Flat Screen goes for these days??Crayz9000 wrote:It's actually *not* a cable problem.

As long as you're careful and use non-conductive tools you won't really injure yourself much. Granted I haven't taken a soldering iron to my monitor to fix wiring problems but I have opened mine up to adjust the focus when it went all fuzzy after the drive home from university. On 2nd thought if Crayz9000 is right I don't think i want to be anywhere near the electron guns.russellb6666 wrote:That sounds like a good idea besides the fact that from everything i've read about computers taking a monitor apart and fiddling with it could most likely mean DEATH so yeah.........I wonder how much a good Flat Screen goes for these days??

According to Kevin Gilmore you'll be fine as long as you keep an arm behind your back so that the current doesn't flow through your body and stop your heart. In other words, don't play with the monitor unless you know what you're doing and have extensive electronics experience. There's capacitors in there at 10's of kV which can and will recharge themselves even if you unplug the monitor well ahead of time and short the caps out. It has something to do with funky dielectrics and chemical processes. If you really want to fix it you'll have to unplug the monitor well in advance and install bleeder resistors across the capacitors and keep them there until you're done fixing things. It's a pain in the ass and rather unsafe so don't do it.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

no problem.......so will this eventually make my monitor complelely uinuseable or will I just have to get used to everything being all yellowy??? because if its going to go tits up on me in the near future i would like to know so I can make the neccessary plans to donate blood and any non vital organs to pay for a new monitor.aerius wrote:According to Kevin Gilmore you'll be fine as long as you keep an arm behind your back so that the current doesn't flow through your body and stop your heart. Or you could try to find a local electronics geek who might be willing to void the warranty (if there is one) on the monitor for a song and a dance.
