Does this random image script work?

Post by Darth Wong »

I'm testing a random image script on the prototype new Empire mainpage. Go to http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/index-new.html in order to see it. It should randomly cycle between several different recruiting images on the right-hand side of the page when you visit or refresh the page.

I'd appreciate people with different browsers testing it to see if it works, and/or offering suggestions if anyone's a JavaScript expert.

Works fine on Galeon on Linux (duh, Galeon is *nix only). However the sidebar has always bothered me- what about something more flat? And it looks too small in comparison to everything else, even on 800x600.

Cleaning the source with a script to have all HTML tags in lowercase or uppercase would be nice. It's nice to see a non-computing site that actually uses valid HTML though, but you missed surrounding the javascript w/ comments which throws off the validator- looks fine in lynx and elinks(text mode browser which is much better than lynx) though.

Oh, and shouldn't randomizing pictures be done server side w/ a perl script (I don't know perl, only bash (bash could probably do it though, but it would suck, and I would need to read up on HTTP)).

The sidebar? Are you talking about the buttons?

Doh, I forgot to re-validate it after adding that script.

Well, JavaScript is more portable. But if you know of a good perl script for doing this, let me know. This is still a work in progress, after all.

If you have the time though, you could make it so that it randomizes AND makes sure it doesn't pick the one that's already on again.

PHP and SSI don't play well together.

The random script works. But the page looks pretty bad, I desperately want to run specialist Korr through the HAB Objective Organ liquidation System.

A new image loaded fine every time I hit shift+refresh. Im running Opera 6.05 on Win2K sp 3.

One of the images with Darth Vader holding what appears to have a light saber in his hand has the upper part of his head cut off. If this is intentional, fine although I think it might be better we see his whole head.

Blech. I now shudder at the thought of the entire Mozilla Suite and it's bloatedness. Then again, my computer is pathetic enough to require a suid (and.sf.net) wrapper script to nice even galeon to -5 to reduce jerkyness, and I've abandoned Firebird (Can't wait to switch DE's once again if a major feature increase is in KDE, since the lack of easily accessible features in GNOME is driving me nuts(but the multiuser simultaneous login w/
automatic killing of the secondary X server is nice)).

Anyways, found some random image scripts here

Also, does anyone know how to use pod2man to generate HTML perl documentation for everything instead of just a single module? I hate man page type documentation for anything more then 2 pages.

By the way Mike, when you overhaul the main site, could you pout up a new poll too? This one seems to be one sided a bit......

IMO you should add "it is your destiny" to the "Join Now" picture. Other then that its working fine.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.
