Figured we should have a new thread if anyone wants to talk about tips/hints/etc about the missions.

In the final mission, after the Monolith arrives, fly over and position yourself above the Gauss gun. Wait for the saber-rattling to end. When they're all marked as enemies, blast the gun until it explodes. This makes the barrel go away so you have more room to move around. Methodically take out all the turrets until she's disarmed. Then position yourself in front of the launch bay and wait for the Major. When he pops out in a cutscene, you'll have a perfect place to snap off some easy shots before he starts to fly around. Dogfight with him. After he's dead, do whatever you please to win. I advise you to blow up the Monolith first, because it's just so satisfying.

Remember, when you first position yourself above the Monolith, leave some room between you and the ship. It's going to go forward suprisingly fast. I learned that the hard way and was rammed by the thing. I got caught in the launch bay opening. :D

According to a developer chat, there are three hidden items somewhere in hyperspace and the Jupiter system in training is 3D! Jupiter and the Galilean moons are actual objects and can be flown past. They lack gravity, but you will die if you fly too close.

All I did was position myself in front of the Monolith right after Omega Squadron arrived so I could blast the major out of the sky as soon as he left the hangar (hey, I like dogfighting Sigma and Epsilon squads... they're fun). His ghost then continued taunting me. Hey, at least he couldn't fire those blasted missiles at me...

So how the hell do you win the mission with the Enterprise and Endeavour? The two ships get whacked so quickly by the raiders I can't do anything.

"I Found Her: Danger and Opportunity" is a FREE Babylon 5 flight simulator. You can download it from http://ifh.firstones.com

Trick is to get the raider's attention. Don't worry about the raiders going after the furies, just take on the raiders going after the two freighters. Just fire in their general direction and they break off. Then pick them off at your liesure.

Tough?! Dude, that was easy. I just sat behind the Monitor and pounded the crap out of it from behind. I took out the 'roid launcher and then pelted it until she blew. Then I took out Major what's his nuts before he could fire off a single missile. Trick is to stay as close to him as you can. See, he needs you to be in his sights for a couple seconds before he can fire off a missile. Use your hat switch on your joystick to slide your fury around instead of the keyboard. Makes combat a hell of alot easier.

You know I have to do everything the hard way, I'm not using a joystick. I took out the Monolith pretty quickly, but the Major launched before I could jump on him immediately. I had to do some pretty impressive evasion to avoid all those missles.

How many hours of practice have you guys put in? I'm still not very good. Can't get past mission two 'cause the Frazis love to ram, and they're really hard to pursue.

I guess it helps that I'm used to playing these types of games. If you have a copy of Descent, I suggest you play it. :)

The trick is to not go over 400m/s when fighting. When you play the Narn mission, use your missiles to take out the transport immediately. Then work on the Frazis by getting as close as you can and sliding around them while you pummel them to death.

Not too many. All I can say about combat is:

-Learn how to use Inertial mode

-Learn how to Match Speed

Master those two functions, and victory will be yours

And if that fails, sometimes ramming them till they give up works surprsingly well.

No, no, these are Frazis, they have better armor. That's their tactic, and half of why I die. So anyway, I've been playing X-wing, Freespace, and Wing Commander games since I was in elementary school, but only played through the demo of Descent. So you guys say inertial mode only is best for combat? And how on earth do you match speed when their first move is to turn around and hit the breaks? I can stay behind a guy in X-wing, but in inertial combat with this kind of acceleration and turning ability it doesn't seem possible to stay behind so much as near. Also, I'm much more used to using a joystick; should I take the time to learn how to use the mouse for this game?

Oh, and the transport missile trick was obvious enough. Got the guys to say
"Look at that transport!"
*transport Green destroyed
"What transport?"

Learn to straff and use inertial mode to conserve fuel. Try not to exceed 400m/s unless you're in hyperspace and going to a beacon.

This game was made for joystick play. Anything else is inferior.

The game is rather painful without a decent joystick. It flies in very much the same way one might expect a fighter in space to behave (unlike X-Wing or Freespace or Wing Commander, which are extremely simplistic in their physics . . . i.e. they are atmospheric flight sims without the atmosphere, or the ground.) To match speed with a target, you hit enter, like you would in X-Wing or TIE Fighter. Though this tends to burn fuel like a sonofabitch if you're not careful.

Also, I learned that spray and pray doesn't work too well with this game. The ship's energy weapons have recoil, which sucks really badly if one is trying to line up on a target while using a crappy joystick that might be as old as some of the board's youngest members.

I thought that was some recoil, but I figured I was just bumping the stick or something. Yeah, I loved this stick when I got it, but now it's getting to be less comfortable for my growing hand and I keep having to set the deadzone wider. Oh well, off to play.

I must be the only person who prefers to use the mouse over a joystick. I find I get more shooting control.

Fucking hell, I'm frustrated. Could someone post their favorite bindings? Just for reference, I've got a 8-button, 4-axis stick with hat and a two-button mouse.

I just use the default settings except I bound the sliding functions to my second hat switch (yes, my joystick has TWO of them) and bound the roll function to my joystick's Z (twist) axis.
