Figured we should have a new thread if anyone wants to talk about tips/hints/etc about the missions.
Get your fill of sci-fi, science, and mockery of stupid ideas

Trick is to get the raider's attention. Don't worry about the raiders going after the furies, just take on the raiders going after the two freighters. Just fire in their general direction and they break off. Then pick them off at your liesure.Defiant wrote:So how the hell do you win the mission with the Enterprise and Endeavour? The two ships get whacked so quickly by the raiders I can't do anything.
Tough?! Dude, that was easy. I just sat behind the Monitor and pounded the crap out of it from behind. I took out the 'roid launcher and then pelted it until she blew. Then I took out Major what's his nuts before he could fire off a single missile. Trick is to stay as close to him as you can. See, he needs you to be in his sights for a couple seconds before he can fire off a missile. Use your hat switch on your joystick to slide your fury around instead of the keyboard. Makes combat a hell of alot easier.Defiant wrote:Hot Damn!! I solved the game!!! Man, is that last mission tough!!
You know I have to do everything the hard way, I'm not using a joystick. I took out the Monolith pretty quickly, but the Major launched before I could jump on him immediately. I had to do some pretty impressive evasion to avoid all those missles.Vertigo1 wrote:Tough?! Dude, that was easy. I just sat behind the Monitor and pounded the crap out of it from behind. I guess it helps that I'm used to playing these types of games. If you have a copy of Descent, I suggest you play it.Alan Bolte wrote:How many hours of practice have you guys put in? I'm still not very good. Can't get past mission two 'cause the Frazis love to ram, and they're really hard to pursue.
Not too many. All I can say about combat is:Alan Bolte wrote:How many hours of practice have you guys put in? I'm still not very good. Can't get past mission two 'cause the Frazis love to ram, and they're really hard to pursue.
And if that fails, sometimes ramming them till they give up works surprsingly well.Defiant wrote:Not too many. -Learn how to use Inertial mode
-Learn how to Match Speed
Master those two functions, and victory will be yours
No, no, these are Frazis, they have better armor. That's their tactic, and half of why I die. So anyway, I've been playing X-wing, Freespace, and Wing Commander games since I was in elementary school, but only played through the demo of Descent. So you guys say inertial mode only is best for combat? And how on earth do you match speed when their first move is to turn around and hit the breaks? I can stay behind a guy in X-wing, but in inertial combat with this kind of acceleration and turning ability it doesn't seem possible to stay behind so much as near. Also, I'm much more used to using a joystick; should I take the time to learn how to use the mouse for this game?GrandMasterTerwynn wrote:And if that fails, sometimes ramming them till they give up works surprsingly well.Defiant wrote:Not too many. The game is rather painful without a decent joystick. It flies in very much the same way one might expect a fighter in space to behave (unlike X-Wing or Freespace or Wing Commander, which are extremely simplistic in their physics . . . i.e. they are atmospheric flight sims without the atmosphere, or the ground.) To match speed with a target, you hit enter, like you would in X-Wing or TIE Fighter. Though this tends to burn fuel like a sonofabitch if you're not careful.Alan Bolte wrote:No, no, these are Frazis, they have better armor. That's their tactic, and half of why I die. Oh, and the transport missile trick was obvious enough. Got the guys to say
"Look at that transport!"
*transport Green destroyed
"What transport?"
