How many files do you have on your computer?

Post by Pu-239 »

20697 directories, 239426 files (then again, much of that are unpacked source trees), 16017 symlinks, 650 char devices and 22 block devices(would have more if I used as static /dev instead of devfs, hehe)

Total = 276140 files, directories, and symlinks (devices, pipes, etc don't count).

I'm considering a switch to Reiser4 from XFS (just switched to that from Reiser3 last week) somewhere in February, since my computer is kind of flaky, and I get filesystem corruption when it crashes (corrupted my dpkg and aptitude databases for example), since Reiser4 either writes the entire file to the FS or not at all, reducing the risk of corruption (supposedly NTFS already has this- of course they need it more). It supposedly is also very fast, however it may be CPU intensive, so I don't know. Also directories can be files at the same time (don't know how this is useful, perhaps hardlinking directories?).

397,000 files counting those in zips (240k without counting those). I didn't count the directories.

Speaking of too many files. I program websites, and one that I worked on had 4 gigs of files.... mostly in PDFs. Another had something like 100,000 product images on it... it makes me wonder WTF do they need with all of those. But then, I wonder that about my own files.

I remember not that far back when I kept all my important files on two floppies... (mumble, mumble, "up hill, both ways" mumble "kids today got no respect" mumble "back in my day" mumble)

Well, assuming going into the C: drive in My Computer, selecting everything, and right-clicking: Properties will tell me:

My sister's laptop (which is what I am forced to use at the moment) has 36, 257 files in 1,132 folders, all of it equalling up to 5.3 gigs.

192,627 files in 9085 folders, total size of 91.1 gb, spanning 91.3 gb on an NTFS 93.1gb hard disk. I didn't count my Debian partitions on my 30gb hard disk.

I need another hard disk. 1.5gb of free space ain't much to play with, and I'm not comfortable going any lower than 1gb.

okay. now i feel rather. . . .small, compared to the amount of files everyone else has. 19,951 files and 1,604 folders. having a puny 3 gig drive doesn't help much though. . . .and i only have a few hundred megs of space left.
