Are there any location where I can just get the plug-in or do I have to download the whole damn thing? I can't seem to find it on the apple site...
And IIRC, downloading the whole thing didn't help at all.

QuickTime is a media architecture which the browser plug-in makes use of. Same as Windows Media. So download the whole shee-bang.

You have to download the whole thing, though if you don't like the player itself, you can always get Media Player Classic.... it'll play anything as long as you have the drivers on your computer.

I have Quicktime but it does not work. Whenever I try to play internet media Windows Media player pops up instead.

Use the
standalone installer if you have to. As for WMP stealing plugin control, the QT Control Panel has an area where you can select what the QT Plugin will control.
