What the fuck?

Post by RogueIce »

Can someone explain this to me?

I just got my home computer hooked up to cable. It worked!

But then when I try to set up my wireless router, it went to Hell... I disconnected the little cable router doohickey, and put it on the wireless router, then connected the CPU to it. Nothing worked, not the CPU, not the laptop. Then I got a bajillion popups from somewhere, and it crashed my CPU. So I shut it down, and reconnected it to the way it was originally.

But now there's a new problem: my moniter, for whatever reason, stopped working! It keeps saying 'No Signal' but I checked the damn cord! It's connected, but there's no signal? Does anyone have any ideas at all? :?

I think that is just a bit...okay a hell of a lot of vague-ness. Can you elaborate more?
History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!

It was vague because that's all the info I had at the time. :|

Anyway, it's a moot point now. It seems to have fixed itself. So, now to see about securing this newfound cable connection. Supposedly this NetGear wireless hub has some kind of security features according to the box, but who knows? :?

Netgear? I have a Netgear router (RP-614). I had some trouble with it at first, but it started to work after a few days of struggling with it.

Yep, NetGear. It messed it up at first, but after unplugging it for the day, coming back, re-hooking the cords, and plugging it back in, it fixed itself.

And the difficulties continue.

It hasn't been starting up. It kept getting to "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." and stopping.

So, now I use my Win98 startup disk. It does it's thing, and now at the end, after telling me various things weren't found, it ends with this:

Code: Select all

Windows 98 has detected that drive C does not contain a valid FAT or FAT 32 partition. There are several possible causes.

1. The drive may need to be partitioned. To create a partition on the drive, run FDISK from the MS-DOS command prompt.

2. You may be using a third-party disk-partitioning software. If you are using this type of software, remove the Emergency Boot Disk and restart your computer. Then follow the on-screen instructions to start your computer from a floppy disk.

3. Some viruses also cause your drive C to not register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.

The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive C.

Device driver not found: 'MSCD001'.
No valid CDROM device drivers selected

To get help, type HELP and press ENTER.

A:\>
A:\>
At of this, I suspect it's either 1 or 3, since there are no third-party partition things on here (if there are, they got there without me knowing). However, it's been working fine, at least until recently when my sister jacked up my internet with her Spyware of Doom download, so maybe it's 3 and there's something eating away at my computer.

And more fun! My home wireless connection won't let me browse the Internet, at least when I left it about five minutes ago! So now I post this at USF and pray I'll get an some kind of help soon.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is there a XP or 2000 install on the c: drive? If so, your HD is probably partioned with NTFS.

My 0.02 cents:
Do yourself a favor and use the cable and not the wireless feature. I don't trust any of the built-in security protocols for wireless at this time.
Or at least use netstumbler.
