STGOD 3 - Background Story

Timeline:
2008 - Hubble Space Telescope detects unidentifiable flashes of light from just beyond the Solar System. Massive spikes in radiation also detected.
2009 - Paranormal sightings all over the globe are reported o New Year's Day, which continue. Apparitions of a different variety and other beings are seen to appear suddenly, then disappear. Governments mystified, scientists stupified. Cults revolving around the new sightings spring up.
2010 - The Stars' Signal cult gains prominence by announcing that they have successfully communicated with apparations, who they claim to be here to save humanity, but their organization is dispersed by various world governments, on charges of conspiracy. A few months later, they are largely forgotten as they go underground.
2012 - Another sudden spike of paranormal activities, and this time, the apparaitions are able to manifest themselves on Earth longer than before.
2013 - The UN and other world governments declare the apparitions to be hostile, and form an organization known as PRID (Paranormal Removal and Investigation Division) to hunt/capture the apparitions, whose manifestations they are able to predict with amazing accuracy by unknown means.
2014 - A sudden outburst of the apparitions are predicted, and warnings are issued internationally. Furthermore, the governments claim that this time, the apparitions will not disappear, as they usually do. Tensions among citizens are high, and xenophobic panic overtakes the world.
The year is 2014, right after the warnings have been issued. The event citizens have been warned about has not yet happened, though it will soon.
