I loved the guy talking about how polite it was. How people weren't swearing or yelling at each other.

Amusingly, this article aired right after the September That Never Ended -- or when AOL opened up an AOL <-> Usenet gateway. The end was already upon them and they didn't even know it.

Wild to see Mansbridge with hair- its amazing how much the 'net has grown over the past decade, from a few people to much of the industrialised world.

Back In The Day, in September a bunch of newbies would flood USENET from their new college Internet accounts. Then they would be assimilated and all would be well.
But when AOL brought USENET access to the Unwashed Masses, the ability of the newsgroups to assimilated the newbies was overwhelmed. Hence the September That Never Ended.

Note: "called Internet, not the Internet" I also find the fact that he talks about how friendly the internet was very funny.

I still miss locall BBS's. Remember those?! Legend of the Red Dragon? TradeWars? GlobalWar? MAn, good times. I remember when the hottest topic among the band geeks was who married the barmaid, and how close you were to killing the Dragon and resetting the game. and tradewars, just...wow. Fights almost got started over that game... "WE WERE ALLIES!!! DOUBLE-YOO-TEE-EFF, DUDE?!" Doom modem-to-modem was....wow....
Good times... *swoon*
