Colour me unsurprised.
Ooh, I feel a Blackadder sketch coming on.
[A Microsoft CEO is informed that a spy is stealing security plans]
Gates: You look surprised.
CEO: I certainly am, sir. I didn't realise we had any security plans.
Gates: Well, of course we have! How else do you think the Windows security protocols are implemented?
CEO: Our security systems are implemented, sir?
Gates: Well, of course they are, all according to the Grand Plan.
CEO: Would that be the plan to continue with total bullshit software security in order for everyone to use tech support at premium service prices only to find out later on the bug was easily averted by a free download earlier delayed and thus lining your pockets with gold and showing what a great cyber crime organisation we are?
Gates: Great Scott! Even you know it!

Why should anyone be surprised?
As soon as I can afford a better computer I consider switching to Linux and keeping Windows just for games.

Just found
this and had to post it here:
eEye Digital Security Inc. discovered the Windows flaw in July 2003, but agreed to keep quiet until Microsoft fixed the problem.
A spokesperson for eEye Digital called the six-month period it took Microsoft to inform the public "totally unacceptable," saying Windows users were vulnerable during that time.
They knew about this in
July? How the fuck did it take this long to fix?

For the love of fuck....
I give up. There is no understanding these people. I'm getting a second hard drive, putting Linux on there, and switching completely once I have some clue as to what the fuck I'm doing.

At our computer science class, the instructor said he knew people who had worked for Microsoft before. Those people said that Microsoft's programming practices were WEIRD and totally different from the usually tried and accepted programming practices you're taught in school.
Heh.

Because our stupid network admins suck ass, I had to go to every pc in my group and make sure that the update was installed. MS's website was so hammered the updates took forever to download. Damn Microsoft!!

Practically no one in the industry uses most of the the types of programming practices taught in school/collage/uni.
The stuff is all 100% A-grade bullshit till someone actually shows it can work.
And guess what, big companies arent going to switch form their proven inhouse methods to something else cos someone else says its better.
People typically dont like to change their habits at all. And thats all these practices are.

People
could look at this the other way around and at least be happy that they are releasing a fix...
EDIT: as a note, everyone be aware that this is rated at the highest MS has ever issued for a patch.
oh, and eEye wrote a
funny poem
and so did I...
-------------------------------------------
Old McBill had a server farm,
eEye, eEye oh,
and on that farm Windows Server lived,
eEye, eEye oh,
with a critical patch here, and an update there,
Here a crash, there a hack, everwhere a hijack....

Apparently they wanted to make sure 1 single patch did everything.
