OK, I have a phone line working, I have an ADSL modem and I have an internet provider. The technician who came today to install the phone line told me I'd need a splitter. True? Do I need anything more?

Hmm perhaps. I have a split that devides the phone and the data cables from the phone socket.

I still don't see the need for a splitter, though. From what I get of the manual, it's complementary. I should be able to plug the phone line directly into the modem. I tried it at home, and it didn't work. But I had to leave and didn't have the time to see if I was doing somwthing wrong.

You usually use a spiltter to separate your phone and data devices. You can also use standalone filters for your telephone -- otherwise you might hear some noise from the ADSL signal (the lower end of its frequency range is in the upper range of voice telephony's frequency range).

Olrik, you're signed up with the Telekom and got yourself T-DSL? As to my knowledge, the splitter is needed.
