Usenet

Post by General Zod »

okay. . . .i just started tinkering around with usenet today, and downloaded a client to get onto it. but, i just found out i need some type of provider to access it. i'm using university computers to get online presently, (free broadband. yay.) but for some reason the thing won't let me connect to any servers i type into it.

the question is: does anyone happen to know of any good usenet servers that can get me into the system? and preferably some good FAQs for a newbie to usenet to get into?

This is the webpage for the server most of the ASVSers use:
http://news.cis.dfn.de/

It's an excellent server, and it's free, text only, though, you usually have to pay for access to binaries.

Just register(free), they send you your password, configure the client, and download the newsgroup list, choose your NG, subscribe, etc.

I hope you don't get scared away, but since you frequent this board, your chances of making it in the ng's are higher than the average web user.

EDIT:
Oh, google around for the FAQ's, there's plenty of them.

A lot of universities often have their own newsgroup servers. Try poking around your university's website to see if they offer any such service.

OSU gives me free access to all of Usenet, including the binaries.
