Does any one know how to get Strike Commander to work on a Windows 98 machine? I found the game going through some old CDs and I was struck with a serious desire to play it. Thanks in advance.

Best I can do is forward you to the WC Tech Support forum, they're pretty good at handling legacy Origin game questions and you don't even need to register to post: http://www.crius.net/zone/forumdisplay.php?f=3

You might try Dosbox.

Did you mean to say "tried once"? They've recently come out with a new version, and the website now lists Strike Commander as being supported.

I tried the most recent one I could get my hands on. That program it self didn't work.

I tried last year with the Underdogs download, you'll need to go back to messing around with config.sys and autoexec for it to run.

Boot into DOS mode (hit F8 at startup), it will not run in Windows 98 natively. You will have to mess around with your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to get it working.

You'll probably need an MS-DOS CD-ROM driver as well.

In your CONFIG.SYS

Code: Select all

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMANDS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\COMMANDS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=PATH\TO\CD-DRIVER /D:MSCD001
In your AUTOEXEC.BAT

Code: Select all

PROMPT=$P$G
SET SOUND = (flags for Sound Blaster emulation if your card supports it)
SET BLASTER= (flags for Sound Blaster cards)
LH PATH\TO\MOUSE-DRIVER
LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001
