Heh, my roommate had either 1800 or 8000 pieces of spyware detected by Ad-Aware. I honestly don't remember which one it was.

That's peanuts. Every single computer that I've checked for SpyWare that had any at all, 90% of the time had 2000 or more objects detected. Sometimes a week after the initial treatment (the user couldn't be convinced to stop browsing that stupid horoscope website )

That would be a permanent solution. I only care that their machines work properly while I need them, and then I'm out of there and they can all go to hell!!!

Ive got that Ad Aware 6.0. Came with AoL 9.0. seems to be somewhat helpful. Although I think I've now picked some mean shit up. Pop ups everywhere.

I'm amazed that it still ran with that much shit installed....though I imagine most of that was "data miner" cookies.

Use SpywareGuard. This sets the kill bit for an ActiveX ID string and data mining cookies! Perfect for making sure the computer is never infected in the 1st place.

Adding another browser doesnt help, they can just switch back to IE because they dont like to change.

I usually run Spybot Search & Destroy off my USB keychain drive on all public school computers I can to clean them out. They are often infected with all sorts of garbage.

If I can, I prefer to just boot Knoppix off the CD-ROM. I'm getting sick and tired of public Windows terminals...

Oh, and by the way, many of those thousands of unrecognized objects are simply cookies from, for example, advertising.com or doubleclick.net. Internet Explorer is rather lax about cookies (and everything else for that matter -- and it doesn't help when a stupid sysadmin locks out the Internet control panel when it's set to the low security level.)

Where's the fun in that? When they come beggin me to clean their machines, and I do it, and two days later they're full of garbage again (for doing what I explicitly said they shouldn't - like browsing garbage sites) I get to yell at them and call them names.

I don't know, Ad-aware got a lot of stuff that spyware search & destroy missed for me.

The solution? Use both. That's what I do.

Btw, my dad's computer looked like that when I got him to install Ad-Aware.

Have a very nice day.
