Final Fantasy Thoughts

I recently bought a PS2 and have been playing it late at night after work as sort of a stress reliever and I popped in FF X. I have been hooked on this game since. All the other PS2 titles I got are just sitting there collecting dust.
Has anyone else played it? It's great, brings back very fond memories of FFVII. Tidus and Auron rock! I have yet to finish the game so no spoilers please.
My experience with FF is VII, VIII and now X.
VII was by far my favorite. Cloud was a great main character and the revlation about hsi past provided one of the single greatest plot twists in computer RPG's I've played. The Materia system was great (Kicked the ass of that retarded junction system in VIII) and Sephiroth was da man.
Aerius' final fate was heartbreaking (this is a computer character for fuck's sake) and all those other wonderful gaming moments.
With a PS I intend to track down the other titles and play them. It seems I was missing out on this wonderful series restricting myself to PC gaming.
So what are your fond memories of the FF series? Favorite game, etc?

if you can find a copy i'd suggest getting ahold of the PSX remake of FF6 (as i mentioned in another thread). it totally kicks ass. as well as FFIV, another classic. all in all i'd say IV, V and VI are the cream of the series, while everything else is just so-so compared to those particular titles. if you haven't played anything before seven, you're definitely missing out.

They offer FF VI with Chrono Trigger. I intend to get it this weekend.

yea, i would say FF 6 (3 in the US) was the best of them all, with 7 a close second. After that, they all went down hill

Nah they didn't!
You can get every Final Fantasy from FF1 to FFX-2 now, Stravo. FF Origins, Chronicals, and Anthology have the first 6 that came out on Ninentendo and SNES.
I do suggest waiting for FFX-2 until after you've finished FFX.

You know, I didn't like FFX all that much. I guess the real problem for me is that I felt the characters were somewhat lacking (voice overs can do that since you aren't limited to your imagination anymore) but I think the real problem I had with it was no overworld map and the fact that I hated the world of Spira. I've usually loved Final Fantasy worlds, but Spira didn't do it for me (although I really liked what I saw of Zanarkand at the begining).
As for my favorite Final Fantasy, that's a hard one. I really like FF VIII for the characters, FF VII for the game world and story and FF VI for the sheer epicness of it. But I've played every Final Fantasy game there is and I never truly disliked any of them (with the exception of Mystic Quest) because they have always embodied everything I like about console RPG's. Early indications are that Final Fantasy XII is going to be closer to the PSX FF games in design and the screenshots already have me salivating.
Oh, and Stravo:
PLAY CHRONO TRIGGER!!

I wish they made a FF8 instead of that steaming pile of crap that they just called ff8. After playing that horrid game, I actually threw my CDs out the window. In fact, due to that game, i lost faith in Square. Just play PC RPGs now (the are way better then console anyhow).
Fallout series and Baldurs gate are the best RPGs ever.

FFVI is probably the best all-around - The Opera House sequence is just as riveting today as it was ten years ago (god, I can't believe FFVI is ten years old). The FFX games have the best gameplay though, I would argue that they are the pinnacle of CRPG game mechanics.

Ah Final Fantasy...fantastic series(I may not have loved X-2...but I can appreciate it for being a quality game).
FF1- basically a level up game with a very weak and very strange back story.
FF2- Good story...horribly messed up leveling and magic system.
FF3- okay story...the first of the JOB system games. Fun for the time.
FF4- Fun game, nice hokey story but fun game. One of the more rigid game systems of FF.
FF5- The best of the Job systems, story was actually quite good, but THE ABSOLUTE WORST NAME FOR THE MAIN MALE.
FF6- My fave. One of the best FF's...big epic story and likable characters.
FF7- An excellent FF, I never liked the main villain, but the game and story were fanastic.
FF8- the weird one. People either love it or hate it. I like it...great story, slightly cheesy characters, but great game.
FF9- a combo of things. Trip down memory lane, but very enjoyable.
FF10- my next favorite. While had VAing, I loved the game almost as much as when I played FF3(6) for the first time.
And I agree...play CT.

Final Fantasy Origins is currently available for the PS - it includes FF1 and FF2.
FF favorite moments

(Spoilers are a possibility so stop reading here if you are fearful about that.)
FF3: My favorite moment is the time when you meet Shadow for the first time, and you are told that Shadow "would kill his mother for a nickel". That was highly amusing.
FF7: The death of Aerith was touching, Vincent's background with Lucrecia. The cut scenes dealing with the activation of the weapons and ultimately, the brutal "brooklyn" style beating I gave Sephiroth with the nail bat at the end of the game.
FF8: Certainly not my favorite game, but it had its moments. The most memorable part about it was the ending sequence in my mind.
FF9: Getting my ass kicked by Beatrix is something I have still not forgotten, thinking that Kuja was a girl for a while and the cut scene dealing with Odin were very memorable.

I've always loved VI. It had a wide range of characters, a good plot, lots of fun moments, great music even if it was on a SNES ... it was just cool all around. The CG scenes done for Final Fantasy Anthologies are gorgeously put together.
I liked VII, too. It was a nice departure from the old, Dungeons and Dragons-style. While VI was somewhat in that area as well, VII had a great, dark atmosphere to it. The plot was kind of ... weird (planet's life energy and all that), but the game was great.
VIII is awesome. I love the game, and I appear to be one of the few who does. Everyone else finds one reason or another to hate it, but I enjoyed it. When I read that it would be primarily a love story, I rolled my eyes and thought it would basically suck. I was very wrong. There was great character development, a good over-arching storyline, and a love story that was really well-done. The CG scenes were just breathtaking in many areas, as well. VIII definitely has the best finale of all the Final Fantasy games. It's 15 minutes long, Faye Wong has a beautiful voice, "Eyes on Me" is campy but terrific, the credits were funny and the last scene at the end was cute. The score for the whole game was excellent, as well.

FF3: My favorite moment is the time when you meet Shadow for the first time, and you are told that Shadow "would kill his mother for a nickel". That was highly amusing.
The line is "He'd slit his mama's throat for a nickel!" Memorable line, Ted Woolsey is one of the most underappreciated people in the history of video gaming.
FF9: Getting my ass kicked by Beatrix is something I have still not forgotten, thinking that Kuja was a girl for a while and the cut scene dealing with Odin were very memorable.
Now that we're on FF9, I gotta say, Beatrix was the biggest problem I had with the game. I mean, she assisted Alexandria in laying waste to several countries and was party to the murder of at least thousands of innocent people. But when Disc 3 started up, she was the good guy, like nothing had ever happened.

Thanks for the clarification on the line Joe.
It has been a while, so I did not remember it as it should have been. *shifty eyes*
Beatrix was an irritating enemy, and the whole switcharoo thing was annoying but ultimately understandable. It took a bit of time for Beatrix to realize that her side was doing shady things. Until then, she was just following the orders of her queen. It did not bother me so much as the fact that she is unbeatable in the first three battles you fight her. I can understand the reasoning, but damn I hate invulnerable tags. *sighs* She was hot though, and I forgive a lot of things for that. ^_~

FF2 still gets me as one of the harshest leveling-up systems I know of, don't know of anywhere else your stats can decrease by doing one thing too much.
Having played FF7 again recently, I'm still wondering why Cloud's flashback in the Nibelheim Mansion basement and Vincent (along with his flashback with Lucrecia) being optional. (And yes, I know about the budget.)
I also note that since my computer's more powerful than when I played it last time, the bike chase sequence goes way too fast.
As for the others, I can't really add more that hasn't already been said.

FF7: It's all about when I gave Emerald WEAPON some of the ol' ultraviolence. Motherfucker thought he was bad? Check this shit.
Cloud: Knights of the Round-Quadra Summon, Mimic
Tifa: Mimic
Vincent: Mimic
Red XIII: Mimic
Cloud uses Knights of the Round four times, Tifa mimes, Vincent mimes, Red mimes, etc. etc.
FF9: I really, really liked this game. Second-favorite, after FF7. I don't understand why it catches so much shit. So Kuja was metrosexual. So what?
FFTA: I have to go with the heretic's opinion and say that I liked this game better than the original FFT. FFT was hampered by a tremendously awful translation ('Stop Bracelet'? How the fuck do you mistranslate 'Breath' as 'Bracelet'?), which made it really hard to get into the story. Plus, FFTA introduced some cool new classes (Fencers > all), and the allmighty BUNNY GIRLS!

I enjoyed FF7 a great deal. Although I don't understand why everyone loves Sephiroph so much. I guess with all the hype, I was expecting more. Aeris's death was very poignant, and would have been moreso if I hadn't known about it beforehand.
FF9 was good, although the story seems to suffer near the end and the final boss came totally out of nowhere.
FFX... well, I enjoyed it a lot also, at least up to the part where my brother erased my game.
Those are the only ones I've played significant portions of. I started FF4, and got to about the point where Cecil becomes a Paladin, but my interest just waned and I haven't picked it up for quite awhile.

Four characters?
I'm also unaware that you could stick together a Quadra-Magic with a Summon, although I've never really tried. (For obvious reasons.) Perhaps you mean the W-Summon?

FF6 and Chrono Trigger are two of my all time favorite games. I've beaten 1, 3 (on a ROM, so sue me or IM me if you want it and then sue me for distribution), 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and I've played some of the others (numerical and Tactics) but haven't beaten them for one reason or another.

Dang me and my lack of using a fouth.
...and Quadra magic doesn't work with Summons at all. Though you could use it with Contain to produce an extremly nasty effect.
Also for Emerald...it was easy to actually go less MAteria and only what you absolutely needed.
It assraped his Aire Tam Storm(small joke they had of the name)
As for Ruby....just fun because it was easy to avoid it's intial attack by killing the other two people.

FF1 - much fun. Not a hefty amount of plot, but my overactive imagination filled in the gaps.
FF2 - great story very nearly ruined by the shitty level-up system.
FF3 - bzzt.
FF4 - played a bit when I little and for many years it remained a dream of mine. Recently found a copy from my friend and promptly devoured it. Shorter than most, but action-packed.
FF5 - bzzt.
FF6 - will start playing once I beat FF4
FF7 - played a bit of disc one and have been wanting to finish it for some time now. Planning to buy it once I complete FF6.
FF8 - played it once. Never played it again. Decent story, but hated the draw system.
FF9 - loved it. Loved Kuja. Didn't like the abilities system so much, but I lived with it.
FF10 - maybe I'll get it after FF7.
FFX-2 - bzzt.
FFXI - not willing to shell out for the required hardware.
All other FFs - bzzt.
Chrono Trigger - have a copy, will begin playing soo, possibly after FF6. What I've seen so far, I like.

Man, I've played a few but have only completed one of them. The first three I've never even touched, but the first one I've played (and completed) was FF4 easytype. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and thought all the characters were quite well-developed. Excellent final battle and excellent ending.
FF5 I've only played until the beginning of World 3...then trailed off for some reason. While the story is pretty interesting, the characters seem flat and the job system demands far too much micromanaging.
FF6 is an excellent game, from what I've played so far - up to the Lost Continent. Excellent story, excellent characters, excellent development, excellent music. Just excellent all around, and the Esper system was by far my favorite magic-learning system.
FF7 I've only played a little bit of. I think I left off somewhere after Barrett's village, but I don't even remember. I hate the graphics, but the cinematics are nice and the story is absolutely excellent. I was actually *shocked* when (spoilers) Shinra(?) actually collapsed part of Midgar onto the city below. That is fucking harsh. Far too long since I've played it...but the materia system sucks.
FF8 I played only a little bit of, but Zaia has insisted that I must play this game.
FFX? FFX is amazing. It's one of the most depressing and emotional FF games I've ever played. After the aftermath of the Crusader/Al Bhed attack on Sin I actually had to save the game and shut down. My only problem with it is that I hate Tidus, and I don't really like the sphere grid system (even though it's growing on me).
And Chrono Trigger...is the most excellent of all. Story, music, characters, drama, love...it has it all in spades.
