56kers in multiplayer.

This topic has been just begging to of been posted, How do people feel about 56k'ers or slower in a broadbanders gaming world?

For me, I honestly think 56kers should be allowed to play in games if their connection doesn't lag above (500ms.),

However I do feel they if a server says "Broad band only" 56kers should stay out.

Disscuss? Flame? Vote?

Above 500ms? Haha >200ms is lag my friend. 56kers can sod off or plan on dial-up only servers. Sorry but I pay for broadband to have a good gaming experience, I don't want some cheap 56ker ruining it. Before you say "Well I can't afford it" or "It isn't in my area" tough! You can't afford your own jetpack, thus that is why you aren't flying around on one. Bad analogy sure, either way. Fuck off 56k gamers. Lag someone elses game.

Hey I got broad band too, I am just waiting to see how people react before I start posting up an opinon, I have posted this same debate on 4 other boards over the last day or so. Some people are like you, others are crying like I am "Satan" or hitler for saying 56kers should be limited to smaller scale games of like 6 vs 6 games.

Games like Counter-Strike and Diablo 2 that were made when 56k was still prevelant should continue to support them. However, 56kers joining, say a game of UT2k3 have no room to complain if they lag or are booted.

I guess it depends on the game. Many games where made when 56K or 128K was the only speeds available. In those cases as long as they don't slow down too much, then why not.

Clients do not affect server latency on an individual basis!

The lagiest mofo in the world could join a game, and the only noticeable effects will be that said laggy player's character will often "warp" around from packet loss.

Actually that depends entirely on the game and its design. For instance a game that makes sure there is synchronisation tends to lag everyone when one person lags. Though this is old practice and they are getting much more efficient in recent FPSs but I believe CS still works like that.

Incorrect depending on the game, some games such as the venurable Quake series sure, having everyone on 5-10 pings with an outside 530 pinger won't realy notice an effect however in some cases, Most notiacble in the old Game Battlezone II which had lockstep pings(Everyone plays at the slowest persons speed to make it "fair") and BF1942 whos network code will "anticpate" for laggies and make everyone, not just the lagger warp around

I don't give a hoo ha what anyone else's ping is. If they got the balls to join an InstaGib server and pick up their Railgun, they're fair game. Although I'll tend to attack anyone who's actively shooting at me rather than someone who's hiding by hanging off the underside of the map with their grapple hook...

That's fucking Hooey. I grow weary of this argument. If Joe cocksucker on the red team is pinging 500+ and you're pinging in at 30ish, the only effect it's going to have is Joe Cocksucker will probably look like he's teleporting all over the place, while on his screen, both him and you are smooth as silk. Result: He probably frags you, unless you toss a grenade or something along his trajectory.

Splash weapons=good.

Anyway, this is iffy at best, too, since most games run just fine on 56k. It will *not* Slow down the server or make everyone else lag. It's not a "Weakest link" thing.

That's my understanding, and I'm sticking to it.

Well it is too bad your understanding is flawed.

I personally don't care if they have a 56k, as their lag is tolerable. I've seen people with 56ks with latency below 100, although I've also seen the other end.

I'll be honest - I get really pissed when I play a game of SC, and some 56ker joins, and lags the whole thing to hell and back. Or when I play an FPS and the other person starts teleporting around. If a server says something like "56kers stay out", they should expect to have to enforce their rules.

Let em play lest they have truely horrible lag.

They screw up my Warcraft 3 games all the time. And they're usually on my team. Then they quit and leave my side a player short, which royally screws you.

What really SuX0rZ:

I'm constantly being called 'Skippy' or Skipper despite my 30 ping at most Quake 3 servers. And no, it's just as stuttery for me as my movements are for them. I've traced the source of the problem to some process external to Quake absolutely _hammering_ the C drive while I play. Everything else runs off D:>. How do I know it's C:>? The HDDs sound different to my ears when they chatter. I think it's Windows being an ass or the fact I'm running a Deschutes-type Pentium 2 at 400MHz...

56kers would never dare play MoH on-line. ~Jason

Unless the server specifies that the server is suppose to be broadband only, I see no problems with people with dialup playing... Except for the people with computers and/or connections which are obviously not up to playing (ie. pings well over 300, since from my experience less than 300 pings is acceptable), who just spoils the game for everybody.

I'm a 26.4ker who has attempted to play CS occasionally, and have played Vendetta (really hurts me more though, since then I have a tendency to ram stations at full speed)...

As long as their ping isn't too bad, I say let them. There's still vast swaths of land throughout America where broadband might not penetrate for years.
Fuck off 56k gamers.
As a former 56k user, fuck you too.

Unless the server says "broadband only", I'm gonna join. I don't give a shit if anyone complains. I join to play, not to listen to people bitch just because my higher ping (200 - 300ms typically) puts them at a disadvantage because they have to adjust their aim. I'm so happy those of you with BB can actually pay for it. There are those of us that can't, or don't have BB available so don't shut us out because our pipe is smaller than yours just because you (those that voted BB only) are an elitist asshole.

With the UT engine's network code, it's kind of the other way around. If you have a high ping, expect to get fragged a lot more as during the lag periods, your avatar will freeze on screen and anyone who shoots you during that frozen period will register a hit.
