I've just finished downloading a rather large video clip and when I try to play it in Windows Media Player, it keeps telling me there's an error downloading the codec and I only get sound and that stupid Ambience crap.
Any ideas folks?

Try using GSpot to find the codec it's using and a possible download site if you don't have it installed.

Ok, I've used the G Spot thing and for video it says that theres no Codec installed. Where can I get one?

Try using the RENDER button in the lower part of the screen. It should give you some directions.

If you put your mouse over the status areas (in Video or Render zone) IIRC you should get tooltips with hyperlinks to download the codec.

Hmm do you know what codec it uses?

Anyways D/L and install the following:

DivX Find the codec only on the page.

Xvid It might be this one, new and popular with the movie crowd.

Yea, I rendered it and it said "Partial Failure". When I click on it for details it doesn't give and links to video codecs.

Well I assume it'd be Xvid because it the Video Codec box it says:
"4CC: xvid Name: Xvid"
"Codec NOT Installed"
Although I have no idea what I'm looking for on the Xvid website.

This is the one for Windows:

http://www.filemirrors.com/search.src?f ... 2002-1.exe

The Xvid site can be a bit messy....

IMHO, ffdshow is better for MPEG4 playback due to its many post-processing filters. I use the 5/23/2003 alpha build.
