Which do you prefer, and why?

Personally I prefer Action, morely because I get more swashbuckling out of it. :)

Definitions:

Action battle system: Battle system where you are in control of your character in real time, on every map, and when combat begins you draw your sword and fight in an omnidirectional Street-Fighter style way. (examples: Zelda, Secret of Mana)

Command battle system: Battle system where characters either stay on the current screen or switch to a special "battle field", where command menus pop up and turns are taken between characters and monsters. (examples: Any Final fantasy game)

O prefer to somthing like Neverwinter Nights, with a D&D like system played in real time. You issue commands, and can pause to get though a list of spells/special abilities, but your actions are carried out in real time.

Morrowind is good

I think it depends on the game and how good the system is implemented.

Give me Falloutesque turn-based or give me death! Or at least don't expect me to spend overly much time on your RPG unless it's exceptional.
