Freeware Firewall

The free trial of the McAfee firewall that came with my computer expired today and I am waiting till I get some extra money to go out and get a copy of Norton Internet Security. In the mean time I am looking for a reasonably secure free firewall.

I know that it has been brought up here before but I tried a search and nothing relevant came up.

Kerio is great, ZoneAlarm would probably be better for novices though.

When it is finally released, XP SP2's firewall should be pretty good.

I like thu UI of Kerio 2, Kerio 4 trys to hard and is a bit dumbified for my taste.

IE to many tabs and stuff, gime a clean ui with nothing but the rules.

This is the main configwindow of kerio, if you understand this kerio is for you if not I am happy to help you get started :)

Get a router. You'll still probably want some kind of software firewall, but the first and most convenient line of defense is to simply not have your computer directly connected to the Internet.

Unfortunately, ZA is nothing but panicware. Damn thing sets off alarms just for being on fucking DHCP networks for crying out loud. Hell, I could probably just ping someone with ZA and it'll scare the shit out of them with a dozen "intrusion detection" alerts.

Kerio is the way to go.

If you want a low-cost router (as per Wong's suggestion, I highly recommend it as well) then you can give Freesco a shot. All you need is an old PC with two (preferably PCI) network cards and you're off.

Just be warned, the power consumption for a PC-turned-router is typically a bit higher than a regular "black box" firewall router.

www.agnitum.com

Agnitum has one of the best firewalls on the net!!

It is the Outpost firewall. They have a free version and a pro versjon. They also have a good comparison chart where they show you what the most well known firewalls can do, who cant do what, and so on.

You can tell it to shut up. If you didn't find the option to do that, it's not the software's problem.
